also a few who had received education which varied between 7th <strong>and</strong> 9th st<strong>and</strong>ard. The latter<br />

<strong>adult</strong> workers ei<strong>the</strong>r were unit-owners or traders. Big <strong>export</strong>ers <strong>of</strong>ten had a higher educated.<br />

Recreation<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terviewed child <strong>labour</strong>ers said that <strong>the</strong>y had no time for recreation, except on Fridays which<br />

are free days for Muslims. The children work<strong>in</strong>g full-time had <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g schedule: <strong>the</strong>y had to<br />

go home after work <strong>and</strong> take d<strong>in</strong>er, attended moral tuition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mosque or with relatives <strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n, had to go to sleep. The girl children were even more burdened with work dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

day. Because <strong>the</strong>y stayed <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> house almost <strong>the</strong> whole day, <strong>the</strong>y ei<strong>the</strong>r did jobs that were<br />

related to <strong>the</strong> <strong>gem</strong> polish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry, or o<strong>the</strong>r jobs, or <strong>the</strong>y helped <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> household <strong>and</strong> took care<br />

<strong>of</strong> sibl<strong>in</strong>gs. Also on Fridays, <strong>the</strong>y helped <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> household <strong>the</strong> whole day.<br />

All <strong>the</strong> children said that <strong>the</strong>y could hardly f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> time to play with friends, but <strong>the</strong> reason for<br />

that was, apart from work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g unit, that <strong>the</strong>ir parents did not like <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

children to roam about <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> streets while do<strong>in</strong>g noth<strong>in</strong>g. Thus when <strong>the</strong> children had free<br />

moments, <strong>the</strong>ir parents took care that <strong>the</strong>y spent <strong>the</strong>m usefully. The parents gave <strong>the</strong>ir children<br />

moral tuition or let <strong>the</strong>m do o<strong>the</strong>r jobs like assist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir mo<strong>the</strong>r with go<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> market.<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g circumstances<br />

The majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g units were <strong>in</strong> little ver<strong>and</strong>as at <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> street or <strong>in</strong>side<br />

<strong>the</strong> homes. The units which were outside <strong>the</strong> homes were <strong>of</strong>ten very congested, <strong>and</strong> had no facilities<br />

for water, <strong>and</strong> toilets. The streets were used as toilets. In all <strong>the</strong> units daylight determ<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

work<strong>in</strong>g hours. When <strong>the</strong> sun was under <strong>the</strong> unit stopped manufactur<strong>in</strong>g. Dur<strong>in</strong>g visits to <strong>the</strong><br />

units, it was <strong>of</strong>ten observed that daylight was not sufficient to see <strong>the</strong> t<strong>in</strong>y stones properly, <strong>and</strong><br />

this caused <strong>the</strong> most problems for <strong>the</strong> workers at <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unit. Often you saw a worker<br />

turn<strong>in</strong>g his body towards <strong>the</strong> light to see clearly what stage <strong>the</strong> <strong>gem</strong> stone was <strong>in</strong> at that moment. -<br />

The light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> units <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> houses was even worse <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ventilation was very poor. The<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> houses were <strong>of</strong>ten placed <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>ner space with <strong>in</strong>direct light from o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

rooms with one w<strong>in</strong>dow.<br />

The traders <strong>and</strong> <strong>export</strong>ers <strong>of</strong>ten had well lit shops whit desk lamps us<strong>in</strong>g bulbs, which enabled<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to perform <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> select<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> judg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>gem</strong> stones etc.<br />

Health hazards<br />

The most heard health problems <strong>of</strong> children can be summarized as follows:<br />

1. Damaged f<strong>in</strong>ger tops. The h<strong>and</strong> which cuts, shapes or polishes <strong>the</strong> <strong>gem</strong> stone, keeps <strong>the</strong> stone<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> fast mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> circulat<strong>in</strong>g disc. This <strong>of</strong>ten caused blisters or cuts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>gers. The<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ger with <strong>the</strong> wound had to be dipped cont<strong>in</strong>uously <strong>in</strong> dirty water with <strong>the</strong> polish<strong>in</strong>g agents.<br />

This <strong>of</strong>ten caused <strong>in</strong>fections. In many visited manufactur<strong>in</strong>g units it was <strong>of</strong>ten observed that many<br />

children <strong>and</strong> <strong>adult</strong>s with wounds on <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>gers had put balloons around <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue work<strong>in</strong>g. One person who ran a medical shop <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>and</strong>pole Bazar, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

city, said dur<strong>in</strong>g a talk that 'every month around 12 to 14 children younger than 14 years <strong>of</strong> age<br />

came to his shop with <strong>in</strong>fected f<strong>in</strong>ger tips'.<br />

2. Back ache. Often children compla<strong>in</strong>ed about pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> back <strong>and</strong> stiff legs due to sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same cramped position for 8 to 10 hours per day. The <strong>adult</strong>s had <strong>the</strong> same compla<strong>in</strong>ts.
