needed <strong>in</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g care <strong>of</strong> sibl<strong>in</strong>gs. Also girls worked (apart from <strong>the</strong> household work) regularly <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> nightshift <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hosiery factory, like boys. The girl child, <strong>the</strong>refore, had less free time than <strong>the</strong><br />

boy child <strong>and</strong> was burdened with a double workload. Her health was more at risk than <strong>the</strong> health<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> boy child.<br />

4.5 Case studies <strong>of</strong> hosiery manufactur<strong>in</strong>g units <strong>and</strong> a <strong>labour</strong> union <strong>in</strong> Tirupur<br />

The visited knitwear manufactur<strong>in</strong>g units <strong>in</strong> Tirupur, consisted <strong>of</strong> suppliers <strong>and</strong> <strong>export</strong>ers. It was<br />

possible to see all <strong>the</strong> processes <strong>of</strong> knitwear production, like <strong>the</strong> bleach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> dye<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

fabric, pattern mak<strong>in</strong>g, cutt<strong>in</strong>g, stitch<strong>in</strong>g, button hol<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> stitch<strong>in</strong>g, clean<strong>in</strong>g, iron<strong>in</strong>g, fold<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally pack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>garment</strong>s for shipment to o<strong>the</strong>r countries.<br />

Due to <strong>the</strong> sensitivity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> child <strong>labour</strong>, it was not always possible to ask questions<br />

related to (child) <strong>labour</strong>. Apart from <strong>export</strong>ers <strong>of</strong> Tirupur also <strong>export</strong>ers <strong>in</strong> Bombay were<br />

contacted who have supply<strong>in</strong>g units <strong>in</strong> Tirupur. The latter units were also visited. The <strong>export</strong>ers<br />

came <strong>the</strong>mselves from Bombay to Tirupur <strong>and</strong> showed me <strong>the</strong> units. These <strong>export</strong>ers <strong>of</strong>ten did<br />

not want to elaborate on questions related to <strong>labour</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten used <strong>the</strong> excuse that <strong>the</strong>y were not<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed about <strong>labour</strong> related issues because <strong>the</strong>ir actual job is <strong>in</strong> Bombay. Though <strong>the</strong> factory<br />

visits could not give me detailed <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong> exact ages, wages, work<strong>in</strong>g hours, reason <strong>of</strong><br />

work<strong>in</strong>g etc. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> children, o<strong>the</strong>r observations <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation (such as work<strong>in</strong>g circumstances)<br />

will enrich <strong>the</strong> research <strong>in</strong> many aspects.<br />

It was found that many European retailers, cha<strong>in</strong>-stores <strong>and</strong> buy<strong>in</strong>g houses do bus<strong>in</strong>ess with <strong>export</strong>ers<br />

<strong>and</strong> manufacturers <strong>in</strong> Tirupur. The <strong>garment</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g units <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>export</strong>ers <strong>and</strong><br />

manufacturers were visited. The majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>export</strong>ers subcontract <strong>the</strong> work to smaller units<br />

(suppliers). In most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> (<strong>export</strong>) manufactur<strong>in</strong>g companies <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g conditions were bad.<br />

For example, most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> employers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se supply<strong>in</strong>g units or direct <strong>export</strong> companies did not<br />

pay legal m<strong>in</strong>imum wages, workers did not get social security benefits like ESI <strong>and</strong> PF, work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

overtime was not paid twice <strong>the</strong> salary, work<strong>in</strong>g days lasted much longer than 8 hours, women<br />

earned lower wages than men for <strong>the</strong> same job, workers were not allowed to organize <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

<strong>and</strong> to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>labour</strong> unions <strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>export</strong>ers <strong>and</strong> suppliers employed children <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> production process. The foreign retailers, cha<strong>in</strong>-stores <strong>and</strong> buy<strong>in</strong>g houses, <strong>of</strong> which it was<br />

found that <strong>the</strong>y buy <strong>the</strong>ir knitted <strong>garment</strong>s from <strong>garment</strong> <strong>export</strong>ers <strong>and</strong> manufacturers <strong>in</strong> Tirupur<br />
