world but are preferred to stay <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> house). Sab<strong>in</strong>a looked very pale <strong>and</strong> afraid <strong>of</strong> talk<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

anyone who was a stranger, like me.<br />

In her house <strong>the</strong>re were three mach<strong>in</strong>es, two for polish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> one for drill<strong>in</strong>g holes <strong>in</strong> small<br />

worked on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r mach<strong>in</strong>e polish<strong>in</strong>g ruby stones which is a precious stone <strong>and</strong> more costly.<br />

After two years she received Rs 400 per month which her parents collected from <strong>the</strong> owners <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>es who came regularly to <strong>the</strong> house. These owners also supplied <strong>the</strong> family with rough<br />

ruby stones. Her fa<strong>the</strong>r earns Rs 200 per day.<br />

Because <strong>the</strong> work took place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> home she nearly worked <strong>the</strong> whole day but could also move<br />

around more freely. When <strong>the</strong>re was not much work or when she was not polish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> stones,<br />

Her family consisted <strong>of</strong> her fa<strong>the</strong>r, her mo<strong>the</strong>r, four bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> one sister <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> age range <strong>of</strong> 5 to<br />

this job for three years. Sab<strong>in</strong>a's fa<strong>the</strong>r had education up till <strong>the</strong> seventh st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>and</strong> her mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

was illiterate. Later Sab<strong>in</strong>a's parents sent her to <strong>the</strong> Special School as <strong>the</strong>y thought that education<br />

was better for her.<br />

Sab<strong>in</strong>a liked <strong>the</strong> job she was do<strong>in</strong>g as it was all happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>side her own house. Now she<br />

preferred go<strong>in</strong>g to school, to become a good person <strong>and</strong> self-dependent later <strong>in</strong> life. Though she<br />

had always gone to <strong>the</strong> Muslim school which consisted ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>of</strong> moral lessons, now she got<br />

subjects which would give her a future like ma<strong>the</strong>matics, read<strong>in</strong>g, writ<strong>in</strong>g, H<strong>in</strong>di etc. At <strong>the</strong> end<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview she became a little more relaxed, <strong>and</strong> said that she wanted to become a doctor.<br />

The service she would give free <strong>of</strong> charge. Her aim was to cure people <strong>and</strong> prevent <strong>the</strong>m from<br />

illness.<br />
