family <strong>of</strong> 4 members <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 'KVR slum' near Tirupur. Her fa<strong>the</strong>r sells edibles on a cycle car <strong>and</strong><br />

earns Rs 1000 <strong>and</strong> her mo<strong>the</strong>r works <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction which adds ano<strong>the</strong>r Rs 600 to <strong>the</strong><br />

family's <strong>in</strong>come. Still this money is not sufficient for <strong>the</strong> family to live from. So <strong>the</strong> parents<br />

decided that Rani should work too. The best option is <strong>the</strong> hosiery factory, which is next to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

house <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> slum. There is no need to travel a long time to <strong>the</strong> workplace, which is much safer<br />

for young girls.<br />

This week she has worked 5 shifts <strong>and</strong> also one nightshift up to 1 a.m. The job consisted <strong>of</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> cloths <strong>and</strong> arrang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m. For that work she receives Rs 20 per day. Next to Rani,<br />

The workplace is well ventilated <strong>and</strong> spacious, accord<strong>in</strong>g to Rani. She can make use <strong>of</strong> a toilet<br />

<strong>and</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water facility. Rani went to school before this job up till <strong>the</strong> third st<strong>and</strong>ard. But her<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r told her that <strong>the</strong> family is suffer<strong>in</strong>g from loans taken earlier, <strong>and</strong> that he can not pay back<br />

<strong>the</strong> loans. For that reason <strong>the</strong> family had left <strong>the</strong> village. Rani is compelled to go to work <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

money she receives she has to give to her mo<strong>the</strong>r. Her fa<strong>the</strong>r also wants her to cont<strong>in</strong>ue her education<br />

mistakes <strong>the</strong> supervisor scolds him.<br />

Selva says that work<strong>in</strong>g is sometimes very tir<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong>re is only a 1 hour lunch break. When he<br />

works till late <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re is no o<strong>the</strong>r break. Though he gets tea dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> nightshift, it is<br />

sometimes difficult not to fall asleep. This is <strong>the</strong> same for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r 29 children who are work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
