Why do mosquitos bite?
Female mosquitos are the biters, but they don’t bite for food.
They actually eat plant nectar. They need protein from blood
to lay their eggs.
Why do mosquito bites itch?
Female mosquito’s saliva contains proteins that keeps the
blood from clotting. Our immune system tries to break down
those proteins, causing the itchy swollen red bumps we get
when we are bitten.
Hummert’s Helpful Hint
Piperonyl butoixde (PBO) is an organic compound used as a
component of pesticide formulations. It is a waxy, white solid
and it is a synergist to help the active ingredient. That is, despite
having no pesticidal activity of its own, it enhances that potency
of certain pesticides such as carbamates, pyrethrins, pyrethroids,
and rotenone.
