Bob Oats<br />

Description: Winter oats that are a great source of fall<br />

and winter forage. Nutritious and palatable. Commonly<br />

planted with winter rye grain, winter rye grass, winter peas<br />

(Austrian), rape, turnip, radish or kale. 75-100 lbs/acre.<br />

Buck Oats<br />

Attractive to: Deer, turkeys,<br />

rabbits<br />

Best season to plant: April-<br />

October<br />

Description: Excellent winter<br />

hardy oat. Slow growing in<br />

fall, which makes it more<br />

tender and palatable. Retains higher protein than most oats.<br />

Preferred in side-by-side food plot trials. 100 lbs/acre.<br />

Buck Wheat<br />

Attractive to: Deer, quails, doves, turkeys, ducks<br />

Best season to plant: April-July<br />

Description: Produces an abundance of seed in 70-80 days.<br />

Holds seed well on stalk long after ripening. Does well in any<br />

type of soil - poor, fertile, peat, sand, clay or loam. 40-50 lbs/acre.<br />

Millet, Japanese<br />

Attractive to: All wildlife, but especially<br />

waterfowl<br />

Best season to plant: Spring for upland/dry<br />

and summer for wetland/waterfowl<br />

Description: Most widely used for ducks.<br />

Can be planted in wet soil or standing water. Aggressive<br />

germination makes it easy to use. Plant duck standing water<br />

plots in early summer. For upland birds or in deer plots plant<br />

at 5-10 lbs/acre. Crowding will decrease production.<br />

Chufa<br />

Attractive to: Turkeys, deer and ducks<br />

Best season to plant: April - July<br />

Description: Grows like a peanut, except does not have a<br />

shell. Tubers mature in 100-120 days. Wildlife, especially<br />

turkeys, will scratch and dig the tubers. Chufa is considered<br />

an especially succulent treat. Wildlife will hover in an area<br />

that is chufa rich. 15-30 lbs/acre.<br />

Chicory<br />

Attractive to: Deer and turkeys<br />

Best season to plant: August-October<br />

Description: A highly palatable plant that is considered a<br />

perennial. Very winter tolerant and produces an abundance<br />

of spring and summer forage. High mineral content makes<br />

chicory irresistible to deer. Highly drought resistant due to its<br />

deep tap root. Withstands grazing pressure well. High protein<br />

with a high percent of digestability. 5 lbs/acre.<br />

Sorghum, WGF<br />

Attractive to: Deer, quails, turkeys, pheasants<br />

Best season to plant: April-June<br />

Description: Excellent sorghum for wildgame. 28” - 36” tall.<br />

Deer will leave alone in summer, but go after in the fall once<br />

it is out of dough stage. Better for flushing birds as it is taller<br />

than Egyptian Wheat.<br />

Sunflower, Peredovik<br />

Attractive to: Upland birds, deer<br />

Best season to plant: Spring, summer<br />

Description: Matures in approx 100<br />

days. Grows 4-5’ tall so can be utilized by deer, although the<br />

true fans of these oil rich seed heads are the upland birds.<br />

When mixed with cowpeas, birds and deer will arrive in<br />

summer to begin feeding and be trained to the area when<br />

the black oil seeds are ready. Plants remain standing which<br />

continues to provide shelter as wildlife shatter seed heads to<br />

feed on. 25-30 lbs/acre.<br />
