Soil Moisture Indicators
Irrometer ® Soil Moisture Indicators
FOR EFFICIENT IRRIGATION SCHEDULING
The IRROMETER supplies soil moisture information by acting as a “dummy root.”
It consists of a sealed, water-filled tube equipped with a porous, ceramic tip that is
installed in the ground at desired root zone depths. In dry soil, water is drawn out
of the instrument, reducing water volume in the IRROMETER, thus creating a partial
vacuum, which is registered on the gauge. The drier the soil, the higher the reading.
Irrigation reverses this action. The vacuum previously created in the tube by dry soil
draws water from the now irrigated soil back into the instrument. This in turn results
in a lower gauge reading. Two instruments are necessary for accurate assessment of
available water at the root zone: one is set shallow, the other deep.
IRROMETERS help
keep moisture
and nutrients in the
active root zone
The shallow instrument
Model ‘SR’ – Standard
The “SR” Irrometer is the standard instrument for use in
medium to heavy soils. Instrument includes a threaded
replaceable tip as well as reservoir, air free gauge chamber
and hermetically sealed IRROMETER vacuum gauge with
dual scale of centibars and kilopascals (0-100 cb [kpa] range).
IRROMETERS prevent over-irrigation and
waste of water and soil nutrients in this area
Model ‘LT’ & ‘MLT’ – Low Tension
The “low tension” IRROMETER incorporates a replaceable
“Quick-Flo” tip, and a sealed gauge which has a full scale
of 0-40 kPa. Designed for situations where tensions above
30 kPa are rarely expected. Ideal for very coarse soils; for
container-media (non-soil), which can be relatively dry at
10-15 kPa; or where rapidly changing soil water status needs
to be observed. MLT is a miniature LT for small containers.
Watermark Soil Moisture Sensors
Watermark Digital Meter with Sensor
These sensors can be buried to any soil depth where moisture content needs to be read. The wires are
attached to the portable WATERMARK meter that reads electrical resistance in the 0-200-centibar range.
The WATERMARK meter is a solid-state alternating current resistance bridge meter that is adjustable for
soil temperature variations. One meter is required to read all WATERMARK sensors. Meter has an LCD
display, touchpad operating panel, durable case and field changeable cable assembly. Sensors are also easily
interfaced with dataloggers. (Sensor protection required when interfaced with electronic logging devices.)
WATERMARK Electronic Module: Designed to interface WATERMARK sensors with individual 24VAC
solenoid valves to provide soil moisture control to automatic systems. Fully adjustable from wet to dry, with
“off” or bypass position for sensor control override. Can also be used to interrupt controller master valve
circuit. Comes complete with two WATERMARK sensors. Other versions available that control groups of
valves on common ground systems.
