Soil & Water Test Kits
Soil pH Test Kit ( 4.0-8.0 pH range)
The pH value affects all mineral elements and the biological
processes made available to plants from the soil. Accurate pH
testing is essential to determine lime requirements and to insure that
a mineral-rich soil is also a fertile one.
To adjust the soil pH to favor your plants, refer to the plant reference
list in the Soil Handbook(1504) and determine which group these
plants belong to. Then consult the lime-alum tables and determine
any adjustment in soil reaction necessary to give the best results.
It is sometimes desired to make an on-the-spot check for soil pH
without previous preparation of a soil sample. This may be done
following the regular test procedure, but avoiding soils with an
excessive amount of moisture.
The resulting reading should be checked later using the
recommended procedure for a prepared soil sample.
Water Alkalinity
The alkalinity of water used in irrigation is an important property
that can significantly affect crop response and pesticide efficacy.
Alkalinity is not a measure of the pH of water. It is, rather, a
measure of the carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxyls dissolved
in the water. It is these substances that accumulate in a growing
medium and cause a gradual rise of its pH. Alkalinity in irrigation
water can be reduced by using a fertilizer with a moderate
to high potential acidity or the injection of acid. The level of
alkalinity is what determines the type and amount of acid used.
In general, acid should probably be used when alkalinity levels
exceed 200 to 250 ppm. Bedding plant crops do better with water
alkalinity levels are below 200 ppm. Similarly, plug crops require
levels of 100 ppm or under. Alkalinity levels can be determined 3
ways:
1. If you are on a municipal water supply, call
your local water company
2. Buy an alkalinity test kit
3. Send a water sample to a testing laboratory
