enticement, though, is hardly needed, given <strong>the</strong> documented propensity<br />

of monks <strong>the</strong>re to sneak out over <strong>the</strong> walls even without<br />

solicitation.) In Tibet, while masturbation and oral sex are taboo,<br />

whores are okay as long as you pay for <strong>the</strong>ir services yourself. In<br />

Thailand, with a population that is 95% Buddhist, monks get <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

names in <strong>the</strong> papers for having been caught with pornography,<br />

sexual paraphernalia, and more than one woman at a time. And<br />

that publicity is even independent of <strong>the</strong>ir Rajneesh-like collections<br />

of vintage cars, some of which were obtained via <strong>the</strong> misuse of<br />

temple funds. (Ironically, Kornfield himself practiced meditation<br />

“in <strong>the</strong> remote jungles of Thailand” under <strong>the</strong> guru Ajahn Chah in<br />

<strong>the</strong> early ’70s [Schwartz, 1996]. Perhaps <strong>the</strong> jungles <strong>the</strong>re are simply<br />

not “where <strong>the</strong> action is,” but in any case, <strong>the</strong> idea that precepts<br />

are in general followed <strong>the</strong>re or elsewhere in <strong>the</strong> East “by all<br />

members of <strong>the</strong> religious community” in no way matches <strong>the</strong> facts,<br />

as we have repeatedly seen. For more of <strong>the</strong> same purely wishful<br />

And things could be different in contemporary India, building<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> constraints “obeyed” by Ramakrishna and <strong>the</strong> like? Sadly,<br />

no:<br />

That little seven year old is a real Lolita. She’s <strong>the</strong> best lay<br />

in <strong>the</strong> ashram (in Mehta, 1979).<br />

Or, as one five-year-old boy in Rajneesh’s Poona center complained:<br />

“Fuck, fuck, fuck, all we ever do is fuck!”<br />

At least one “older and wiser” six-year-old girl in <strong>the</strong> same<br />

community, however, saw things from a more adult perspective; for<br />

she<br />

delighted in grabbing men’s genitals through <strong>the</strong>ir robes.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r offered to suck <strong>the</strong> penis of every man she saw in<br />

<strong>the</strong> public showers (Franklin, 1992).<br />

Of course, that situation did not improve upon Rajneesh’s messianic<br />

move to America, where one could easily find three-year-old<br />

girls sobbing <strong>the</strong>ir hearts out to <strong>the</strong>ir mo<strong>the</strong>rs:<br />

None of <strong>the</strong> boys will fuck me!.... It’s not fair! Just because I<br />

wear diapers <strong>the</strong>y won’t fuck me. They said I’m a baby! (in<br />

Franklin, 1992).
