The manufacture, shipping, installation, operation, removal and modernization of each of these systems produce damaging carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Reducing the volume of CO2 (typically referred to in this context as simply carbon) emitted during the lifetime of a system is the ultimate goal. The carbon created over a system’s lifetime is referred to as Whole Life Carbon (WLC) and in itself is a complex concept. It can typically be thought of as comprising two fundamental components: • Embodied Carbon - the total CO2 emitted in producing materials, estimated from the energy used to extract and transport materials as well as from the manufacturing process itself; • Operational Carbon - the total CO2 emitted due to the building’s energy consumption in use. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGIES In the UK many respected bodies have responded to the government’s net zero legislation with guidance and methodologies for the assessment of carbon emissions. Key amongst these is the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) methodology for impianti meccanici, gli impianti elettrici, idricosanitari, antincendio e, naturalmente, i sistemi ascensoristici. Le attività relative alla produzione, spedizione, installazione, funzionamento, dismissione e ammodernamento di ciascuno di questi producono emissioni dannose di anidride carbonica (CO2). L’obiettivo finale è riuscire a ridurre il volume di CO2 (in genere in questo contesto si parla più semplicemente di carbonio) emesso durante la vita di un impianto. Il carbonio generato nel ciclo di vita di un impianto viene definito Whole Life Carbon (WLC) ed è di per sé un concetto complesso. Tipicamente, lo si suddivide in due componenti principali: • carbonio incorporato (Embodied Carbon), ossia la CO2 totale emessa durante la produzione dei materiali, stimata tenendo conto dell’energia utilizzata per estrarre e trasportare i materiali e del processo di produzione stesso; • carbonio operativo (Operational Carbon), ossia la CO2 totale emessa dai consumi energetici dell’edificio durante il suo utilizzo. METODOLOGIE DI VALUTAZIONE Nel Regno Unito numerosi enti autorevoli, in risposta ai requisiti net zero previsti dalla legislazione nazionale, hanno predisposto linee guida e metodologie per la valutazione delle emissioni di carbonio.
