Their presence is closely linked to snowfall, whether natural or artificial. Due to changing climatic conditions, in all ski resorts, at any altitude, the presence of snowmaking facilities isnow an essential component of winter mountain tourism, necessary to enable the functionality of the ski resorts themselves and, consequently, of the entire economic chain. This is followed by an in-depth study of the problems of the ʻmountain systemʼ world, aimed at understanding under what conditions, or rather preconditions, cableways can function. La loro presenza è strettamente legata alle precipitazioni nevose, siano esse naturali o artificiali. A causa dei cambiamenti delle condizioni climatiche, in tutte le stazioni sciistiche, a qualunque altitudine, la presenza di impianti di innevamento programmato è ormai una componente essenziale del turismo montano invernale, necessaria per permettere la funzionalità delle stazioni sciistiche stesse e, di conseguenza, dell’intera filiera economica. Artificial snow The essential raw material for winter skiing is snow on the slopes. From the graph below, which depicts the height of natural snow on the ground in an Alpine resort at high altitudes (2,300 m above sea level), it is clear that, at our latitudes, natural snow is no longer sufficient to prepare ski slopes. The technology of snowmaking systems consists of freezing droplets of water in contact with the ambient temperature: the water, transported along the slopes by underground pipes, is atomised by the nozzles of snowmakers (so-called cannons) and mixed with compressed air; the heat exchange between the droplets and the ambient air at temperatures below about -4 /-5°C wet bulb causes the water to freeze and the formation of the ʻsnowflakeʼ. Energy costs Snowmaking systems began to be part of the landscape of ski resorts from the 1980s onwards, when they served as a supplement to natural snowfall in small areas. Given the purposes for which they were installed and in relation to the technological availability at the time, the systems were characterised by low flow rates and high energy consumption. Costi energetici Gli impianti di innevamento programmato hanno iniziato a essere parte del panorama delle stazioni sciistiche a partire dagli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso quando servivano come integrazione, in piccole zone del comprensorio, alle precipitazioni nevose naturali. Viste le finalità per le quali erano installati e in relazione alla disponibilità tecnologica dell’epoca, gli impianti erano caratterizzati da bassa portata ed elevati consumi energetici.
