Il6 THE EARLY CLASSIC PERIODS•a continuation of the arrangement of the lats ofthe Maurya Period; the fluted shafts probablyrested in a form suggesting the Brahmin waterbottleor lota. The erection of such shafts at theentrance of the temple has many precedents inancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, and must beaccepted as yet another survival of early Indiancontacts with western Asia. The Karli chaityadiffers from others of the type in that the facadescreen is of carved stone, with the exception ofthe lotus window, which consists of the usualteakwood framework. The sculpturing of thisentrance wall is extraordinarily rich and colourful.The whole structure appears to rest on thebacks of elephants that were originally fittedwith metal ornaments and ivory tusks. A fewreliefs in this narthex are centuries later than thededication of the cave in a.d. 120 and belong toa period when the sanctuary was converted toMahayana worship. (Recent research by DrWalter Spink of the University of Michiganreconsidering the historical, epigraphical, andnumismatic evidence for the date of the AndhraDynasty suggests that a date off. 32 B.C. markedthe beginning of this era. Accordingly, the datesof the earliest and latest chaitya-halls at Bhajaand Karli should be revised to c. 50 B.C. anda.d. 120.x)The interior [63] of this largest of therock-cut temples is one hundred and twentyfourfeet in length by forty-six and a half feet inwidth, and the vault rises forty-five feet abovethe floor; so that the scale of the shrine is thatof a Gothic church. The basilican plan persistswith the usual rock-cut stupa located in the circumferenceof the ambulatory. Only in the ambulatoryof the apse do the plain octagonal shafts<J-Ûs1 261.
