ROMANO-INDIAN200•ARTmust have risen to a height of one hundred feetabove the ground. The remains of a Buddhistchaitya have also been discovered there. Thistemple, erected on a square double platform,consisted apparently of a cella of massive proportionswhich, originally, was probably only alarger version of the small Kashmir temples of alater period. The construction at Parihasapuraischaracterized by the literally gigantic size ofthe blocks of ashlar masonry employed. Thesegreat stones were apparently joined together bygypsum mortar and irondowels. The largeststone of all was the great block, fourteen bytwelve feet, that formed the floor of theBuddhist temple.Another phase of the classical architecture ofKashmir is represented by the Brahmanicalbuildings dating from the eighth to thethirteenth century a.d. Of these structures themost impressive is certainly the sun-temple atMartand, which appears to have served as amodel for all later Brahmanical shrines [ 1 39 and140]. The great beauty of the setting on a highplateau framed by distant mountains contributesenormously to the impressiveness of thetemple. The central shrine is again placed in themiddle of a rectangular court with a surroundingcellular peristyle two hundred and twentyby one hundred and forty-two feet in dimensions.It was built by King Lalitaditya in themiddle of the eighth century a.d. The templediffers from other examples in Kashmir in theaddition of a portico to the central building forthe accommodation of special rites in conjunctionwith the worship of the sun. Between theportico and the garbha griha or cella is anothersmall chamber corresponding to the pronaos ofa Greek temple. The shrine was originallycovered by a pyramidal roof, and attained aheight of close to seventy-five feet. The massivedecoration of its exterior contains elementsspecially typical of the architecture of Kashmir.
