CHAPTER 24JAVAThe history of religion and art in the inland ofJava was determined by the continuous infiltrationof immigrants from eastern and southernIndia. That some of these settlements tookplace as early as the fourth century a.d. is attestedby the presence of Sanskrit inscriptions inwestern Java, although no architectural or sculpturalmonuments from this period survive. Thefirst great period of Javanese art comes withthe establishment of religious pilgrimages inMiddle Java in the seventh and eighth centuries.The great complexes of temples on the DiengPlateau were not located within the precincts ofthe Javanese capital, but were isolated religiouscentres inhabited exclusively by priests. Themajority of these temples are dedicated to Vishnu,and in their resemblance to Gupta, Pallava,and Chalukya prototypes are actually more Indianthan Javanese.A typical example of the Dieng temple isCandi Bhima [377]. It consists of a box-likecella with a small projecting porch. Above thecella rises a pyramidal tower of terraces repeatingthe form of the base in progressively decreasingscale; on some of the higher levels areprojecting amalaka quoins recalling this form inIndo-Aryan temples. Presumably the structurewas crowned with a completely stylized lotus ofthe same amalaka type. The storeys of the towerare also decorated with chaitya niches enframingheads and busts of deities, ornaments that recallPallava architecture of Mamallapuram.
