CEYLON•375in spite of its great scale and weight, it has somethingof the feeling of the bronzes of the CholaPeriod - the suggestion of a moment ofsuspended animation, and the communicationof the idea that the figure may at any momentstir into action.Perhaps the most notable group of laterarchitectural monuments is associated withthe reign of Nissanka Malla (i 198-1207); this isthe collection of temples and viharas in theso-called Great Quadrangle, in what at one timemust have been the centre of the capital [302].Only a few can be selected for analysis, but theyare among the most beautiful and satisfyinglyproportioned buildings in the entire Indianworld. In the extreme north-east corner of thisprecinct is the pyramidal shrine, perhapsoriginally a stupa, known as the Sat MahalPasada [303]. Its shape conforms to what in thesastras would be designated as a Meru temple,with the seven successive storeys of the terracedstructure representing the imagined hieraticconfiguration of the world mountain. Actually,the building is much closer in style to manyof the pre-Angkorean shrines of Cambodia andthe San Mahapon at Lamp'un in Siam 23 thanany structure known in India proper. It maywell be that this temple was put up expressly forthe benefit of the Cambodian mercenaries of theSinghalese kings, so that its unique elevationcould" be explained as an intentional imitation ofone of the more familiar Khmer types.Nearby is the Tooth Relic Temple, misnamed'Hata-da-ge' 24 [304]. This structure isbuilt entirely of finely cut and fitted blocks ofashlar masonry. It rests on an encirclingpodium ornamented with panels of seated lions.The walls proper are left bare, except for tworectangular areas on the facade enclosed in asunken relief pattern of harhsa and containinginscriptions incised into the face of the wall.The effect produced by these large areas of wallsurface, relieved only by the most delicate surfaceornament, is not unlike that produced by304.
