SDT <strong>Service</strong> Description Table.This DVB SI table describes the characteristics of available<br />

services. It is located on PID 0x0011.Two types of SDTs are specified by DVB, the SDT<br />

Actual and the SDT Other The SDT Actual is a mandatory table that describes the<br />

services within the transport stream currently being accessed. The SDT Other<br />

describes the services contained in other transport streams in the system.<br />

SDTV Standard Definition Television. SDTV refers to television that has a quality<br />

equivalent to NTSC or PAL.<br />

Section A syntactic structure used for mapping PSI/SI/PSIP tables into transport packets of<br />

188 bytes.<br />

<strong>Service</strong> A collection of one or more events under the control of a single broadcaster. Also<br />

known as a Program.<br />

SI <strong>Service</strong> Information. A DVB protocol that specifies all data required by the receiver<br />

to de-multiplex and decode the programs and services in the transport stream.<br />

Mandatory DVB SI tables include TDT, NIT, SDT, and EIT.<br />

Single Mode Fiber An optical wave guide (or fiber) in which the signal travels in one mode.<br />

SLA <strong>Service</strong> Level Agreement<br />

SMPTE Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers<br />

SNG Satellite News Gathering. Refers to the retransmission of events using mobile<br />

equipment and satellite transmission.<br />

SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol. The standard protocol for system and<br />

network administration.<br />

SNR Signal to Noise Ratio. The ratio of the received optical signal power divided by the<br />

RMS noise floor for the detector.<br />

Softswitch Device in a telephone network which connects one phone line to another entirely<br />

through software<br />

SONET Synchronous Optical NETwork. A transport interface that enables the public<br />

network to carry services. SONET is the North American optical fiber standard that<br />

supports transmission rates that start at 51.84 Mb/s and reach to 2.488 Gb/s.<br />

SPI Synchronous Parallel Interface. A standard DVB interface for a transport stream.<br />

Splice A permanent junction between optical fibers.<br />

Splitter (Optical) A passive device which devises optical power among several output fibers from a<br />

common input.<br />

Splitter A device used in DSL to allow continued use of POTS or ISDN services while at the<br />

same time supporting a DSL technology on the same copper pair or loop.<br />

SPTS Single Program Transport Stream. An MPEG-2 transport stream that contains one<br />

unique program.<br />

SRA Seamless Rate Adaptation. ADSL2 feature enabling the system to change data rate<br />

while in operation without any service interruption or bit errors.<br />
