261. The conjunction l y (birya) 'would that', and occa¬<br />

sionally -6 }J- (khozga), of about the same meaning, are<br />

usually employed before the optative. Examples: l j<br />

4jiUU'^ y\ (birya amin bi-tirsa-m-aya) 'would that I feared';<br />

4)ljUip 4«! \y (birya ama bi-tirsa-in-aya) 'would that<br />

we feared', etc.<br />

262. The negative is formed by substituting the negative<br />

particle J or li for the prefix ; (bi). Example: ^j^l \iy<br />

AAaXj-y (birya amin na-tirsa-m-aya) 'would that I had not<br />

feared', etc.<br />
