Singular<br />

(da) to the preterite par¬<br />

ticiple, we have the 3rd person singular, imperfect tense.<br />

224. The general characteristic of the imperfect tense of<br />

all verbs is the employment of the present tense prefix i<br />

(da) with the preterite stem, which combination indicates a<br />

continuous past.<br />

225. The 3rd person singular is the naked preterite parti¬<br />

ciple prefixed by i (da), without any pronominal suffix or<br />

personal ending.<br />

2^6. The negative is formed by simply prefixing the neg¬<br />

ative particle j or \j . Examples: c^L-JSi ^y^ (amin na-da-<br />

tirsa-m) 'I was not fearing' ; (jL-JX y\ (atu na-da-tirsa-i)<br />

'thou wast not fearing' ; L^jJ jl (aii na-da-tirsa-) 'he, she,<br />

it was not fearing', etc.
