Hand made cloth toys made by toy library volunteers (Brinquedos de
pano feitos pelos voluntários das brinquedotecas)

The first toy library run by volunteers in Japan was started by Ms. Ruth
Kobayashi in 1981 in Mitaka City, Tokyo. The Japanese National Council
of Toy Libraries (JNCTL) was established in 1983. As of April 2011 the
number of JNCTL membership is four hundred and fifty-one.
The Japanese handmade cloth toys made by toy library volunteers
are very popular all over the world and their high quality is recognized
internationally. Since 1987 in Canada at all the past International
Conferences, JNCTL held the oral presentation and the workshop of
handmade cloth toys. After each conference we presented those handmade
cloth toys to the host countries as gifts. As a result Japanese
handmade clothe toys are very popular among a lot of children around
the world.
In 2009 Dr. Minejima and co-researchers conducted a research about
“Handmade toys in toy library activities” in corporation with JNCTL.
The research was subsidized by the Children Future Foundation. The
purpose of this research was encouragement of toy library volunteers

to make handmade cloth toys. A DVD, “Handmade Cloth Toys” was
produced as a part of the research to give the high quality of play to the
toy library activities. The DVD will be presented at the workshop.
Cloth is soft, safe and heart-warming material familiar to children as
they use linens and clothes since right after their birth. We can arrange
a various kinds of device with cloth. We can attach buttons, snaps,
strings, zippers, etc. on to cloth. Children enjoy playing with handmade
cloth books and toys and at the same time they learn how to button
or tie ribbons and so on. Their fine motor skills are promoted while enjoying
play. How wonderful handmade cloth toys are!
We display a lot of handmade cloth toys at the workshop for hands-on
play. Therefore not only watching the DVD, the participants can play
with the toys and can get information directly from the volunteers who
made these toys.
