This study aims do analyze possible differences in the emotional impact
of hospitalized children before and after being in contact with a
toy library. 13 children participated, average age of 9 (6-12 years old),
with 62% female and 50% suffering from complex congenital heart
diseases. An identification form was used as the instrument, with personal
data, questions related to play and an adaptation of the Drawing-
-Themed Stories, by Walter Trinca (1997), before and after being in
The observation of cardiopatic children in a toy library of an institution
led to a desire to understand whether the disease changes their way of
playing. A descriptive study was conducted through the application of
interviews, addressing issues related to the theme. The sample consisted
of 17 parents of cardiopatic children of both genders, age between
6 and 12, who received outpatient care in a reference cardiology hospital.
The results of this research were compared to “The Discovery of
This study was to find out how 39 pediatric patients evaluated the hospital
toy libraries in Belém, state of Pará. The main results found were:
in the toy library, children like to play, to watch, to read, to paint and to
contact with a toy library. Results showed that before the contact with
a toy library, 85% (n11) of the children perceived the hospital as threatening,
feeling insecure and scared. After such contact, 69% (n9) of
them changed the perception for a more welcoming environment, and
felt supported and protected. We conclude that an environment which
is structured with toys (toy library) stimulates the ludic action and softens
the psychological impact of hospitalization for children.
Play” research, performed by IPSOS institute to Unilever (2006) with
children without heart diseases between 6 and 12 years old, which main
objective was to understand the playing of a Brazilian child in general. It
was found that, generally, the surveyed parents see playing positively,
as an important factor in the development of their children. However,
it was found that cardiopatic children tend to play with less frequency
activities which require more physical effort.
draw; only 13 children mentioned something that was not of their liking
in that area, and most of the suggestions referred to the acquisition of
toys and games.
