2996 The development of the Toy Library to an Inspiration Room
Anna-Lena, Margareta Raask; Inger Elisabeth Eriksson – Sweden ( anna-lena.raask@orebroll.se )
Toy Library concept, like any other, undergoes a continuous transformation
over time both in theory and in practice. We see an opportunity
to spread an idea that is not too costly for families and institutions and
to stress the importance of play and employment, in child and adolescent
development. The Inspirations room view can be adapted to all
countries regardless of the economy. UN Children’s Convention states
that all children have a right to play. Play is the key to child development.
It is in play that the children develop their minds, their motor
skills and ability to interact. Most children play spontaneously. Children
with disabilities, physical or mental, often need the help of adults to
play. The mission of the Habilitation is to support children and families
where the child has a disability. The Inspiration Room is a development
of the Toy Library where parents can borrow toys. The goal of the
Inspiration room is an activity that gives inspiration and ideas on games
for children and adolescents who have difficulty finding appropriate
play materials and occupation. The toys will be current and available
to be bought in the open market. The Inspiration Room has an Open
house dayevening once a month with different themes such as “math
playing”, “autism and play”, etc. where we show our material teaching
tips, simple adjustments and pursuits. We offer courses in simple adaptations
of toys and other materials. To the Open house dayevening, parents
and staff in the child’s network come along. The Inspiration Room
is also shown at each single visit, for children and young people and
its network. We also receive visits from people interested in creating
a similar business because we were the first in Sweden to change and
develop our Toy Library to an Inspiration room.
Luciana Carolina Cleto de Souza - Brazi ( lugatinha3@hotmail.com )
The toy library is gaining more and more areas in environments outside
the schooling context in Brazil; in Curitiba we have toy libraries in
hospitals, in the communities and also in the Social Assistance equipments.
The Social Action Foundation – FAS is the administrator of the
Social Assistance Politic in Curitiba and is introducing toy library areas
in settled spaces as well as itinerant ones since 2005 in Reference
Centers of the Social Assistance – CRAS; during 2011, 25 itinerant toy
libraries are already in effect, administered by CRAS. It is in the Basic
Social Protecion, in the Service of Acquaintance and Strenghthening
of Bonds that the action of the Toy Libraries can be found, being an
important instrument for rescuing the self-esteem and family links,
preventing the occurrance of social exclusion and risk situations, focusing
on the acquaintance and free playing. It is in the toy library that the
user of this service experiments the ludic, cultural, of interaction, sociability
and social protection experiences. This article describes in which
areas these toy libraries are located, how they are being organized, and
how they are being utilized in the CRAS of the city of Curitiba; it also
intends to number who are those professionals involved and what are
the investments of the institution in the qualification of the teams for
the development of the activities, contributing toward the facilitation
of ludic activities and of social relationship for the different life cycles
within the CRAS toy libraries areas.
