Capítulo 23 Bellamy Empezaría por dejar que aquellos cerdos se murieran de hambre. Luego, quizá cuando estuvieran tan famélicos que se arrastraran ante él suplicando perdón, saldría de caza. Pero tendrían que conformarse con una ardilla o alguna otra pieza pequeña; ni en sueños pensaba cazar otro ciervo para ellos. Bellamy se había pasado la noche en vela, vigilando el hospital de campaña para asegurarse de que nadie se acercaba a su hermana. Ahora que ya había amanecido, decidió caminar un poco por el perímetro del campamento. Tenía energía que quemar. Cruzó el lindero del bosque y su cuerpo se relajó al instante cuando las sombras lo rodearon. A lo largo de las semanas pasadas, había descubierto que prefería la compañía de los árboles a la presencia de otras personas. Se estremeció cuando un viento frío le azotó la nuca y alzó la vista. <strong>Los</strong> claros de cielo visibles entre las ramas se habían teñido de gris, y el aire poseía una cualidad distinta; casi húmeda. Agachó la cabeza y siguió andando. A lo mejor la Tierra se había hartado de sus chorradas y estaba preparando un segundo invierno nuclear. Dio media vuelta y deambuló hacia el arroyo, donde solía encontrar rastros de animales. Sin embargo, un aleteo a pocos metros de allí captó su atención y se detuvo a mirar. Algo de un rojo intenso ondeaba al viento. Puede que fuera una hoja, pero no había nada más cerca de aquella sombra. Bellamy forzó la vista y, notando un extraño hormigueo en la nuca, avanzó unos pasos. Era la cinta de Octavia. No sabía qué hacía allí —hacía días que su hermana no se internaba en el bosque—, pero la reconoció perfectamente. Hay cosas que nunca se olvidan. <strong>Los</strong> pasillos estaban a oscuras cuando Bellamy subió a toda prisa las escaleras que conducían a su vivienda. Había valido la pena saltarse el toque de queda, siempre y cuando no lo pescasen. Usando un viejo conducto de ventilación, demasiado estrecho para que nadie salvo un niño lo utilizase, se había colado en un almacén abandonado de la cubierta C del que le habían hablado. Estaba atestado de toda clase de tesoros: un sombrero de ala ancha coronado por un extraño pájaro, una caja con una inscripción que rezaba ABDOMINALES EN OCHO MINUTOS (a saber lo que significaba), una cinta roja enrollada al mango de una bolsa con ruedas. Bellamy había cambiado casi todos sus hallazgos por créditos, pero se había quedado la cinta, aunque les habría proporcionado comida para un mes. Quería regalársela a Octavia. Presionó el escáner con el pulgar y abrió la puerta despacio. Se quedó helado. Alguien se movía en el interior. A esas horas, su madre solía dormir. Avanzó en silencio, solo lo suficiente para oír mejor, y se relajó cuando un sonido familiar llegó a sus oídos. Su madre cantaba la canción de cuna favorita de Octavia, algo que hacía constantemente. Se sentaba en el suelo y entonaba la nana a través de la puerta del armario hasta que Octavia se dormía. Suspiró aliviado. No parecía que su madre fuera a gritarle o, lo que era peor, a sufrir una de sus lloreras, tan inconsolables que a Bellamy le daban ganas de esconderse en el armario con Octavia. El niño sonrió cuando, al entrar en la habitación principal, vio a su madre sentada en el suelo.
