Clearly, the notion thatmodernism went up with the Bauhaus <strong>and</strong> came down with the Pruitt IgoeHouses does little to foster an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the twenti<strong>et</strong>h century as acont<strong>in</strong>uum of history. 7 Moreover, it scarcely secures the p<strong>la</strong>ce of Canadianarchitecture <strong>in</strong> that cont<strong>in</strong>uum.Erickson <strong>and</strong> the Doubles of PostmodernityThe early theor<strong>et</strong>ical tracks that challenged the project of modernity did sodur<strong>in</strong>g a period when the International Style was radically alter<strong>in</strong>g NorthAmerican cities. In <strong>Canada</strong>, massive refigur<strong>in</strong>gs of the cityscapes of Toronto<strong>and</strong> Montreal, which left a wake of demolished historic fabric <strong>in</strong> downtowns“reborn” <strong>in</strong> steel <strong>and</strong> g<strong>la</strong>ss, figure significantly <strong>in</strong> this heritage. Sucharchitectural manifestations of modernism's master-narrative denied peoplenecessary opportunities for negotiat<strong>in</strong>g their built environments <strong>in</strong> terms ofknown experience. Effectively, they were cut off <strong>from</strong> the cultural <strong>in</strong>heritanceof the past.
