At atime when the separation of Quebecfrom what is sometimesdisparagingly called “the rest ofCanada” seems a distinctpossibility, it might beinappropriate to invoke terms thatimply national unity, artistichomogeneity and an unchallengedcanon of values.Les arts et la littérature au Canada ?À l'heure où la séparation duQuébec d'avec « le reste duCanada », comme on le dit parfoisnon sans aggressivité, semble tout àfait possible, il est peut-être malvenu d'utiliser des expressionsconnotant l'idée d'unité nationale,d'homogénéité artistique et devaleurs largement acceptées.True, the present instability mightbe deplored from a politicalviewpoint. But the very lack of auniform tradition, in conjunctionwith a multiple interplay of diverselinguistic, ethnic and culturaltendencies, is perhaps one of theforces that, during the past thirtyyears, has brought about theastonishing flowering of the artsand literature in both francophoneand anglophone Canada. Oneimportant facet of this literary“renaissance” has been the growingawareness of Canadian culture inother parts of the world. Within theinterdisciplinary context of most ofthe Canadian Studies associationsfounded during the seventies andeighties (e.g. in the United States,1971; in Great Britain, 1975; inFrance, 1976; in Japan, 1978) thearts have, from the very beginning,occupied a central position.The essays presented in this volumecannot give a comprehensivesurvey of the state of internationalCanadian studies but they provide asample of the geographical,thematic and methodological rangeof views from abroad, notably fromSi l'on peut sur le plan politiquedéplorer l'instabilité actuelle, il n'enreste pas moins que l'absence mêmede traditions identiques, conjuguéeà l'interaction complexed'orientations linguistiques,ethniques et culturelles diverses, estsans doute l'une des dynamiquesqui a contribué au cours des trentedernières années à l'incroyableépanouissement des arts et deslettres au Canada, tant du côtéfrancophone qu'anglophone.
