18.7% but with a plunge of 37.3% for fresh fruit,<br />

mostly in summer with peach and nectarine For comparison’s<br />

sake, the market virtually went back to the<br />

turnover it registered in 2007, the difference being a<br />

mere 4.3% more in 2009.<br />

The picture we get could even be widened to include<br />

the ongoing downturn in consumer spending of<br />

Italian households and the prolonged contraction our<br />

exporters are seeing in Austria, Germany and Holland<br />

to the north and in Russia, the Baltic States, Hungary<br />

and Romania to the east. Indeed, exports account for<br />

a big share of the turnover at both Verona (45%) and<br />

Padua (50%).<br />

That the recession is still making itself felt in the global<br />

marketplace does not seem to have dampened the<br />

proverbial enthusiasm for business of our wholesalers<br />

operating out of the two Veneto markets.<br />

Indeed, the players at Verona and Padua, together<br />

with those at Treviso, are busy pursuing a better integration<br />

of the three markets, trouble-shooting common<br />

problems like foodstuff testing, establishing<br />

price lists, monitoring and guaranteeing lines of credit,<br />

and putting together the general features of common<br />

promotional campaigns, which will include<br />

incentives from Veneto Region authorities, to prompt<br />

greater consumer spending.<br />

The Padua Municipal Market is the main gateway for produce<br />

exports to eastern Europe.<br />

La consapevolezza della crisi non sembra comunque aver<br />

intaccato più di tanto il proverbiale attivismo dei veneti,<br />

tanto che sia Verona e sia Padova, assieme al Mercato di<br />

Treviso, stanno aumentando gli sforzi per una migliore<br />

integrazione tra i tre poli, per la soluzione di problemi<br />

comuni (analisi dei prodotti, elaborazione dei listini, monitoraggio<br />

e garanzie sui crediti, etc.) e per la predisposizione<br />

di comuni programmi generali di rilancio e promozione,<br />

anche con il contributo della Regione Veneto.<br />
