Despite an economic crisis that
has caused a slowdown in a rate
of growth which has been in double
figures for many years, the British
organic and natural products market
remains among the leaders in Europe
with a sales turnover of more than
2.1 billion pounds (nearly 3 billion
euros) in 2009. Fair Trade products
did remarkably well too, notching up
a 43% increase last year (with sales
of 700 million pounds).
Indeed, in recent years the English
market has been characterized by
great sensitivity to environmental
issues and to the need for a healthy
and balanced diet. You need only consider
that the United Kingdom boasts
the largest number of vegetarian and
vegan consumers – and that the annual
turnover in products dedicated to them is estimated
at 735 million pounds.
As for retailing, healthy sales turnover figures have
been reported by both non-specialized stores (+ 1.8%
in value terms for a total of £ 1.54 billion) and specialist
independent shops (also on the rise with a total
turnover £568 million). According to surveys conducted
by the Soil Association (the British association for
the organic sector) and by Organic Monitor, 90% of
British housewives buy organic products. Fruit and
vegetables represented 38% of total purchases.
It seems that despite a new propensity to save, the
majority of British consumers want to continue to live
according to ethical principles of consumption. In spite
