Camarosa and Candonga
The most popular variety being grown
today is Camarosa, followed in the
last couple of years by Candonga. The former
can often bear misshapen fruits because of
marked day-night temperature swings whereas
the latter has a better quality profile in terms of
soluble solids and taste but is low-yielding. Soilgrown
Candonga yields roughly 600 g/plant and
900 g in soil-less, the future target being 1.5 Kilos
in the latter culture.
Most of the crop ripens from February to May, a window
of opportunity because there is no real competition
then from growers in the north or in Sicily.
The nearly 14 thousand tons of crop yearly, a
che anno, si è aggiunta Candonga. La prima, infatti,
per i cambiamenti climatici e, in particolare, gli sbalzi
termici, mostra spesso delle malformazioni dei frutti;
la seconda ha un profilo qualitativo migliore in termini
di solidi solubili totali e gusto, ma una bassa resa. In
terreno Candonga produce circa 600g/pianta e in
fuori suolo 900g, con l’obiettivo di arrivare a 1,5 Kg.
La maggior parte della produzione si concentra tra
febbraio e maggio inserendosi in quella fascia di mercato
libera dalla concorrenza del Nord e della Sicilia.
Date le esigue quantità ottenute, si considerino circa
14mila tonnellate, il prodotto è destinato soprattutto
