Prices up over 2009
Chile’s kiwi industry is projecting slightly higher prices in
2010 compared to a year ago. The upswing is largely due
to lower stocks in Europe and a consumer demand that
is expected to rise in both domestic and export markets.
Our interviews with David Del Curto and Dole Chile,
two of the country’s leading export firms, indicate that
the industry continues to pursue a trade strategy of
greater market diversification, so as to be less
dependent on auction-based sales in countries like
the US and those in central Europe, whilst seeking to
expand direct wholesaling to big retail chains and
boosting share in the Middle and Far East.
Industry players are also investing in new cold stores for
controlled atmosphere so as to extend the sales calendar
to take advantage of higher prices beyond peak dates.
Hayward-quality kiwis.
