Despite the earthquake
Chilean kiwi set to grow
Nonostante il terremoto
Il kiwi cileno punta a crescere
The devastating quake that struck at the end of February does not appear to have
caused irreparable damage to agriculture. Kiwi exporters pursue expansion in the
Despite the devastating earthquake that hit the country
at the end of February, Chile’s kiwi industry expects to
have a slightly higher crop (10%) than last year’s, which
came in at 184,000 tons. The projected rise reflects the
increase in the crop’s plantations and acreage.
The main export market for Chilean kiwi is Europe,
which accounts for 60%, followed by neighbouring
countries in South America, which account for another
10%. Growers and exporters are seeking room for
expansion and are looking to markets in the Middle and
Far East. In effect, while these countries today account
for a mere 5% of Chile’s kiwi exports, they are viewed
as having great potential in that they represent big
areas that have growing consumer numbers and sales
contracts are pegged to fixed prices, a fact that
assures exporters a certain part of their profits.
Chile’s major rival in the
kiwi markets of Asia and
Europe is New Zealand. In
a concerted strategic
effort to consolidate and
advance current and
future business interests
of the industry, more than
20 exporters and growers
have joined forces in the
Kiwi Committee. The main
objectives are to maintain
and ensure a competitive
edge for Chilean kiwi in
world markets on the one
hand and on the other to
avvengono a prezzo fisso e questo permette all’esportatore
di avere parte del guadagno assicurato.
Il maggior concorrente
del kiwi cileno è quello
della Nuova Zelanda, in
modo particolare nei
mercati dell’Asia e dell’
Europa. Con il proposito
business presente e
futuro, per iniziativa di
