Balluff, an exhibitor of SPS IPC Drives Italia, is a
leading global sensor specialist with its own
line of connectivity products for every area
of factory automation. Quality, reliability and
safety are ensured, whether object detecting
sensors, state-of-the-art position measurement
technology, innovative RFID technology or
new solutions for industrial communication.
IO-Link is the first worldwide standardized IO
technology (IEC 61131-9) for communicating from
the controller to the lowest level of automation.
The interface can be used universally and is a
fieldbus-independent point-to-point connection
that operates using an unshielded industrial
cable (IO-Link transmits all sensor signals to the
controller). Such a technology is quite easy to
install: one unshielded three-core cable is enough
for integrating sensors and actuators. This cable
can be up to 20 m long. The connection has been
standardized with M5, M8 and M12 plugs.
Balluff IO-Link blocks make any controller ready
for Industry 4.0: from Profibus and Profinet to CC-
Link and Devicenet all the way to Ethernet/IP and
EtherCAT.
A lower number of devices
An IO-Link master is used with any fieldbus
connection to connect IO-Link sensors/actuators
or IO-Link sensor hubs.
This master has multiple
IO-Link ports so that it can bundle data from various
devices and reduce the number of devices. Some
IO-Link hubs are able to receive and transmit
switching signals up to 16 digital sensors each.
There is also the option of raising to another strip of
the same type, thus arriving at a total of 30 input/
output configurable for each port of the Master.
If these hubs are connected to a port 8x IO-Link
master, data is transmitted up to a maximum of 240
sensors.
Each port on the IO-Link master can optionally
be operated in switching mode (SIO mode for
processing binary signals) or in IO communication
mode, thus processing information from all of the
sensors.
