croce, Il suono dell’organo, Esequie funeraria e I consigli dell’ava: quattro cartoni, eseguiti
These two drawings, worked on both sides, are preparatory studies for Figures and the City
(Casa Museo Sigfrido Bartolini), and for the large The Kiss of the Cross, The Sound of the
Organ, Funeral Rites, and Grandmother’s Advice: four cartoon-like drawingss executed as
finished works and exhibited by Nannini at the 1 st Mostra Invernale Toscana, 1914-1915. As
always, the young Nannini prepared the compositions by working separately on various elements,
paying particular attention to the heads of Buriano’s old people, probably portraying
them during village festivals. In addition, the subject matter and the angular, crisp and
incisive line of these studies indicate a connection to the painting Beggar (p. 116), which is
probably identifiable with The Wandering Fortune-Teller that Nannini exhibited in Florence
in his solo show at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Via Colonna (1915). However, the artist
must have been dissatisfied with this image and he later used the other side of the support for
his Futurist composition Roses (P. 117).
