ELOISA PACINI MICHELUCCI
(Pistoia 1903 – 1974)
Natura morta con la rivista “Formes”
Still Life with the Magazine Formes, 1931 ca.
Olio su tavola | oil on board, cm 41,5 x 53,5
Eloisa Pacini, born in Pistoia but who moved to Rome at the age of 14, took part in the 1st
Mostra Provinciale d’arte in Pistoia (1928), with her husband Giovanni Michelucci, just
two months after their wedding. She presented 12 paintings, including townscapes and
still lifes. Although she was not directly connected to Pistoia’s artistic milieu, her closeness
to the cultural mood in the city is revealed above all in the composition of certain still
lifes, in which the tilted surface or the isolation of objects reveal her adoption of formulas
that can be traced to, for example, Alfiero Cappellini’s Still Life in Pistoia’s Museo Civico
(p. 157).
In this work, dated in the early 1930s, Pacini essays a personal reflection on Pietro Bugiani’s
Composition with the Book of Picasso (p. 159), which the Micheluccis owned.
Her inclusion of the architectural magazine Formes and the curtain in the background
surely derive from this prototype – elements which can in turn be traced to Felice Casorati.
As the painter is not known to have visited Pistoia before the 1928 Mostra Provinciale,
the poetic and formal assonances were certainly determined by trips to Rome made by
Cappellini (1925 and 1926) and Bugiani (1927) (toti 2003, pp. 15-16) as well as by a
spontaneous atmosphere of comparison and exchange.
