organizzava esposizioni provinciali, interprovinciali
(poi regionali) e nazionali.
riconoscimento cittadino. Così malgrado
anche le partecipazioni alle mostre Regionali,
per molti di loro, le ambite convocazioni
alle Biennali veneziane o alle Quadriennali
romane, arrivarono negli inoltrati anni
Trenta. (toti 2007). Viene meno, a poco a
Trenta, artisti come Cappellini, Caligiani,
Chiappelli a collaborare con importanti gallerie
private come la Gianferrari a Milano o
la Galleria Genova; mentre tra il 1939 e il
1940 Innocenti, Cappellini e Bugiani furono
invitati a partecipare al Premio Bergamo
(toti 2007). In città furono adesso gli artisti
a prendere autonomamente parte al dibattito
sulla cultura in atto, portando a maturazione
le proprie poetiche su un fronte di
riflessione in cui trovavano spazio letterati
of public exhibitions, organized through the
corporative system of the Sindacato di Belle
Arti (a ‘labour union’ for artists) at provincial
‘inter-provincial’, (later regional) and
national levels. Such exhibitions provided for
purchases, by the State as well as by more
local private or public bodies. They were
incentives for artists, and places where,
whether as individuals of the generation
born in the first decade of the century, or as
groups, they could meet. Moreover, in 1932,
Caligiani was a trustee of the Sindacato Nazionale
di Belle Arti, a position that Bugiani
(1933) and Luigi Mazzei (1935) would also
hold. Between 1928 and 1938, there were
seven provincial exhibitions between Pistoia
and Montecatini, under the patronage
of the Sindacato di Belle Arti, and thus the
Pistoian artists would have acquired, even if
with difficulty, the city’s approval and recognition.
Consequently, and despite participation
as well in the regional exhibitions, it was
not until the late 1930s that several of them
received the coveted summons to the Venice
Biennales or the Rome Quadrienniales (toti
2007).
Gradually, the notion of adhering to a
shared poetic of art faded, even if it is clear
in the critical literature of the period that a
solid foundation of a ‘school’ distinguished
the Pistoian artists from those of other Tuscan
provinces. A craving to escape the city
limits, to learn what was going on in the
world, led in the late 1930s Alfiero Cappellini,
Caligiani, and Francesco Chiappelli to
show in private galleries such as the Galleria
Gianferrari in Milan or the Galleria Genova
in Genoa, while, between 1939 and 1940 Giulio
Innocenti, Cappellini, and Bugiani were
invited to compete for the Bergamo prize
(toti 2007).
In Pistoia, it was now the artists who inde-
e poeti come Danilo Bartoletti, Piero Bigongiari,
Alberto Ciattini, in questo momento
in dialogo intenso con Cappellini, Innocenti,
Bugiani, Zanzotto. Siamo negli anni delle
riviste di “Selvaggio”, “Frontespizio” e del
pistoiese “Il Ferruccio”, sulle cui colonne
trovarono voce Bugiani, Cappellini, Innocenti,
ma anche Oscar Gallo, Mario Luzi, Bigongiari,
Bartoletti (salvi 2004). Subentra
una diversa idea di pittura che formalmente
trova in Soffici, in Rosai e in Carrà punti di
riferimento importanti e che ancora riaffermano
i temi del quotidiano e della natura.
