Novecento pistoiese I .
come protagonista l’amministrazione
comunale, promotrice della prima significativa
indagine sistematica sulle generazioni
Officine San Giorgio. In questi stessi anni il
Comune di Pistoia, in parallelo all’acquisizione
della Casa Studio dell’artista Fernando
Melani (1987), manifestava l’interesse a
individuare un luogo dedicato all’arte contemporanea,
This sensibility was in line with a period of
scholarly and critical attention to Pistoian
art stimulated by the municipal government,
which sponsored research, especially
regarding artists active through the middle
of the century, leading up to the exhibition
in 1980 La città e gli artisti. Pistoia tra
avanguardie e Novecento, curated by Cecilia
Mazzi and Carlo Sisi, which took place
in the ex Officine San Giorgio. In the same
years, the Comune of Pistoia, in the context
of its purchase of the Casa Studio of the
artist Fernando Melani (1987), began to
explore options for a permanent site for
contemporary art. This coincided with the
growing interest in contemporary art on the
part of the Museo Civico and led to the constitution
of the Museo del Novecento e del
Contemporaneo in Palazzo Fabroni (Musei
Civici di Pistoia). II
The first step towards what was then defined
as the ‘Raccolta di arte moderna e
contemporanea pistoiese’ III was taken in
1977 with the donation by the sisters of the
painter Giulio Innocenti, through Sigfrido
Bartolini, of 19 woodcuts by their brother.
The acquisition was ‘sealed’ by the publication
by the Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e
Pescia in 1978 of a catalogue by Bartolini of
the engraved works of Innocenti. IV
This acquisition was subsequently integrated,
in 1979, by the purchase of four paintings
by Giulio Innocenti – Self-Portrait,
Portrait of Danilo Bartoletti, Figure by
the Sea, Bath – and by the blocks of the
already-acquired woocuts, in addition to a
group of 21 paintings and 238 drawings by
the painter Mario Nannini with the condition,
imposed by the Innocenti sisters in
memory of the friendship that bound the
two painters, that the latter should never
be dispersed. The acquisition of the Nannini
collection was made public in May 1984
zia che aveva legato i due pittori. L’acquisizione
delle opere di Mario Nannini venne
resa pubblica nel maggio del 1984 con una
mostra organizzata nelle sale dell’Antico Palazzo
rispondessero a questi criteri, alcune lacune
in bronzo. Una parte della collezione fu allestita
nelle sale del CRAL aziendale a Palazzo Buontalenti
(adesso Sala Gimignani) VII . Si segnalano
with an exhibition in the Antico Palazzo dei
Vescovi, accompanied by a small catalogue
by Bartolini. V
During the 1980s it was Bartolini who drew
up a list of works of art by artists active
between the wars that should be acquired
in order that the collection should comprehensively
represent the art of Pistoia, with
the purpose and the ‘mission’ (preoccupazione),
made explicit in his text for the
1989 catalogue, “to save from possible loss
evidence of a period of felicitous creativity
among the artists of Pistoia.” VI
While President Ivano Paci justified this
idea of a collection as being an aspect of
the Cassa di Risparmio’s “cultural promotion”,
providing a “service to the city and to
culture”, Bartolini in his 1989 text, emphasising
that the only guidelines for establishing
the collection must be those of quality
and representativeness, stressed that, faced
by the difficulty at that time of retrieving
works that met these criteria, certain gaps
would surely be filled by future acquisitions.
Over the years, new gifts and purchases
have both strengthened the presence of
twentieth-century Pistoian artists and
added works to the collections of the Cassa
di Risparmio from other periods and by artists
not necessarily from Pistoia. 1991, for
example, was the year of a donation of an
important group of works by the painter
and sculptor Corrado Zanzotto, given by
the artist’s family: 16 oil paintings, 99 drawings
and 2 sculptures in clay that the Cassa
di Risparmio hastened, for conservation
reasons, to have cast in bronze. A part of
this donation was installed in the rooms of
the Foundation’s CRAL (Circolo Ricreativo
Aziendale Lavoratori) in Palazzo Buontalenti
(now the Sala Gimignani). VII There
were also acquisitions of Marino Marini, of
some artists of the ‘middle generation’–
