ALBERTO GIUNTOLI
Autoritratto, 1937, olio su tela
Self-Portrait, 1937, oil on canvas
Fondazione Caript, Pistoia, n. inv. 1309
(p. 215). Dello stesso artista si espongono
Among the works from this decade on display
in this new installation, and among
the artists of the 1930s who confirm these
tendencies, there are unexpected re-appearances,
such as that of Innocenti, who, having
turned to a career as an accountant, had
been absent from the 1st Mostra Provinciale
in 1928. He returned to the Tuscan regional
exhibitions between 1930 and 1934 with
previously unexhibited masterpieces such as
anche alcune delle grandi xilografie eseguite
a partire dal 1938 (p. 227), con rinnovato
e originale interesse per questa tecnica, e
alcuni disegni per una Via Crucis (1944) mai
realizzata, che tanto piacquero ad Alessandro
Parronchi (parronchi 1978, pubblicato
in bartolini 1997, p. 29).
opere come Testa d’uomo (p. 192) e Cesarone
in iacuzzi 2000b, p. 174).
anni Venti fino agli anni Settanta. Integra
Figure by the Sea of 1927 (p. 167) the Deposition
of 1929 (p. 200), and Portrait of
Danilo Bartoletti of 1934 (p. 215). Innocenti
also exhibited in later years large woodcuts,
made from 1938 onwards (p. 227), inspired
by a genuine renewal of interest in this technique,
in addition to some drawings for a
Via Crucis (1944) which were greatly admired
by Alessandro Parronchi (though the
painting itself was never executed) (parronchi
1978, published in bartolini 1997,
p. 29). In 1932, at the 3rd Mostra d’Arte of
Montecatini, we find Stanghellini with some
drawings, while among the young new
entries Agenore Fabbri and Iorio Vivarelli
made their debuts at the Mostre Sindacali.
Another newcomer was the sculptor Bice
Bisordi, who exhibited the intimate Head of
a Girl (p. 211) at the 4th Mostra Provinciale
d’Arte in 1933.
Zanzotto, once again in Pistoia from 1929-
1930, made his debut as a sculptor in the
early 1930s. He took part in the 5th and 7th
Mostre Provinciali d’Arte (1935 and 1938,
respectively) with works like the Head of
a Man (p. 192) and Cesarone (p. 208).
Some heads modelled by Bugiani, carried
out in a spirit of camaraderie with his friend
Zanzotto, date from this same period. Significantly,
one of these, of notable psychological
intensity, was of the poet Bigongiari
(reproduced in iacuzzi 2000b, p. 174). In
1933 a drawing by Bugiani was published in
Selvaggio, while among the holdings of the
Fondazione Caript there are engraved plates
(p. 197), evidence of Bugiani’s practice as a
print maker beginning in the mid-1920s, and
which he continued into the 1970s.
A contribution to this partial overview of
Pistoian art during the 1930s, which is far
from exhaustive given the complexity of cultural
tendencies and influences still awaiting
analysis, was Luigi Mazzei’s Madonna
