Gli anni successivi lo vedono
partecipe di analoghe iniziative
regionali e provinciali. Tra
gli eventi più significativi degli
anni Cinquanta ricordiamo la
sua partecipazione alla mostra
di Palazzo Strozzi, Mezzo secolo
d’arte toscana del 1952.
After Innocenti’s very early stage
career as a hypnotist and occultist
was suspended for legal reasons,
he turned instead, in 1914, with
encouragement from Caligiani,
to xylography. In 1915 he showed
some woodcuts at the Primaverile
fiorentina exhibition. In this period
he began a correspondence
with the future writer Gianna
Manzini, his childhood friend. In
1916 he was called up and when
he left the army in 1920 he took
up his studies again, obtaining a
diploma in accountancy. While
working on drawing he contributed
poems, novellas and stories to
various magazines and local daily
papers like Il Popolo Pistoiese
and Giornalissimo, and national
papers like La Nazione and
L’Italia Letteraria in Florence. In
1922 he published Il libro della
via and Ave Roma, illustrated
with his own woodcuts; both of
these works were variously mentioned
in the national press. In
1928 he started work as an accountant
and only occasionally
took part in exhibitions. In 1930
he showed two works in the 4 th
Mostra Regionale d’Arte Toscana
in Florence and in 1934 he was invited
to the 19 th Venice Biennale.
In subsequent years he took part
in other regional and provincial
events: the most important of
these in the 1950s was the Palazzo
Strozzi Mezzo secolo d’arte
Toscana exhibition in 1952.
ACHILLE LEGA
(Brisighella 1899 - Firenze
1934)
Nato in Romagna, Lega arriva
giovanissimo a Firenze, tanto da
essere considerato fiorentino
non solo di elezione. La madre
appartiene alla nobile famiglia
pistoiese Baldi-Papini. Si forma
con il maestro livornese Lodovico
Tommasi e frequenta poi
all’Accademia di Belle Arti la
scuola d’Incisione di Celestino
Celestini. A Firenze ha i primi
contatti con i pistoiesi Chiappelli
e Stanghellini. È grazie forse
a questi contatti e ai legami
di parentela della madre che
Lega frequenta Pistoia e si appassiona
all’arte della xilografia
con Caligiani e stringe amicizia
con Nannini e Lippi. E’ a Pistoia
che fa la sua prima apparizione
in pubblico alla Mostra del 1915
presso la Reale Accademia degli
Armonici. A Firenze conosce
invece Ottone Rosai e Primo
Conti con cui instaura amicizia
già nel 1916. Appena diciannovenne,
nel 1918 viene chiamato
di leva durante la guerra 1915-
18. Insieme a Conti fa parte dei
pittori de “L’Italia Futurista” e
partecipa alla Grande esposizione
nazionale futurista nel
1919. Nello stesso anno collabora
con Ottone Rosai, Primo
Conti e Corrado Pavolini alla rivista
“Il Centone”. La sua prima
mostra personale risale al 1922
nei locali della libreria Gonnelli
di Firenze, città nella quale nel
1934 Ardengo Soffici presenterà
una retrospettiva presso la
Galleria dell’Accademia.
Born in Romagna, Lega came to
Florence when very young, and
has always been considered a
Florentine. His mother was a
member of the noble Pistoiese
Baldi-Papini family. He trained
with Livornese teacher Lodovico
Tommasi and later attended the
Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence
and Celestino Celestini’s
School of Engraving. It was in
Florence that Lega met for the
time the Pistoiese artists Chiappelli
and Stanghellini, and perhaps
thanks to these contacts and
his mother’s family connections,
he visited Pistoia frequently and
became passionately interested
in xylography with Caligiani. He
also made friends with Nannini
and Lippi. His first public show
was in Pistoia at the 1915 exhibition
in the Reale Accademia degli
Armonici. In Florence he met and
became friends with Ottone Rosai
and Primo Conti in 1916. He was
called up to fight in the 1915-1918
war at just 19 years of age. Together
with Conti he was among
the painters of L’Italia Futurista,
and took part in the great national
Futurist exhibition in 1919.
In the same year he contributed
to the magazine Il Centone with
Ottone Rosai, Primo Conti and
Corrado Pavolini. His first solo
exhibition was held in 1922 at
the Libreria Gonnelli in Florence,
and in 1934 a retrospective of his
work was held in Florence’s Galleria
dell’Accademia.
ANDREA LIPPI
(Pistoia 1888 - 1916)
Si forma nell’officina familiare,
una delle più importanti fonderie
d’Italia, nella quale oltre
al vasto repertorio di modelli
antichi ha modo di confrontarsi
con artisti come David Calandra
e Leonardo Bistolfi. Dopo
questi anni di apprendistato
quotidiano, dal 1906 frequenta
l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze
dove segue le lezioni di
Augusto Rivalta e Adolfo De
Carolis e coltiva interessi poetici
e letterari che influenzeranno
i contenuti delle sue opere. Al
periodo fiorentino risale anche
l’amicizia con Lorenzo Viani.
Inizia le prime realizzazioni per
committenze pubbliche e si distingue
in numerosi concorsi
nazionali. Nel 1912 partecipa
alla X Biennale veneziana con
Chimera che opprime l’uomo, una
monumentale scultura in gesso
ispirata dalla suggestione di
un poemetto di Baudelaire. Nel
1913 in seguito alla morte del
padre, Lippi assieme ai fratelli
assume la direzione della azienda
familiare. Nel 1914 Chini e
Plinio Nomellini lo invitano a
partecipare alla Secessione Romana
dove Lippi espone il gruppo
Campane, ispirato dall’omonima
poesia di Edgar Allan Poe
e nello stesso anno è presente
alla Biennale di Venezia con l’opera
Titani. Nel 1915 lo scultore
si distingue a Firenze in una
collettiva con Nannini, Caligiani,
Renato Arcangioli e Emilio
Notte, a Torino e a Pistoia nelle
mostre alle Regie Stanze. Quasi
tutta la produzione di Lippi può
essere collocata nel giro di sette
anni, dai primi lavori del 1909
al 1916, anno della sua precoce
scomparsa.
Lippi trained in the family business
– one of Italy’s leading foundries –
where he came to know a wide
range of classical models as well
as the contemporary works of
sculptors such as David Calandra
and Leonardo Bistolfi. After these
years of daily apprenticeship, he
started in 1906 attending lessons
with Augusto Rivalta and Adolfo
De Carolis at the Accademia
di Belle Arti in Florence. He cultivated
interests in poetry and
literature which would influence
the content of his work. He became
friends with Lorenzo Viani
during this Florence period. He
obtained his first public commissions
and drew praise in several
national competitions. In 1912 he
took part in the 10 th Venice Biennale
with Chimera Oppressing
Man, a monumental plaster inspired
by a poem by Baudelaire.
In 1913, after his father’s death,
Lippi and his brothers took over
management of the family business.
In 1914 Chini and Plinio
Nomellini invited him to take part
in the Secessione Romana where
Lippi showed Bells, inspired by a
poem of the same name by Edgar
Allen Poe, and in the same year
he exhibited Titans at the Venice
Biennale. In Florence, in 1915, the
sculptor took part in a group show
with Nannini, Caligiani, Renato
Arcangioli and Emilio Notte, and
in Turin and Pistoia in the Regie
Stanze exhibitions. Almost all
Lippi’s work took place in a sevenyear
period, from 1909 to 1916,
the year he died prematurely.
ANGIOLO LORENZI
(Lizzano, Pistoia 1908 - Osijek
1945)
Nato nel piccolo paesino della
montagna pistoiese, vicino
San Marcello, Lorenzi ebbe una
formazione artistica da autodidatta.
Entra in contatto con il
gruppo del “Cenacolo” pistoiese
di Agostini, Bugiani, Cappellini,
Mariotti e Zanzotto forse
durante una permanenza nella
campagna pistoiese di S. Rocco
ospite di una zia. La prima notizia
documentata sull’attività artistica
di Lorenzi risale al 1928,
anno in cui partecipa alla Prima
Mostra Provinciale d’Arte a Pistoia.
Nello stesso anno parte
per il servizio militare svolto a
Firenze, dove ha la possibilità
di formarsi culturalmente frequentando
i musei e le gallerie.
A Firenze nel 1929 partecipa
alla II mostra Regionale d’arte.
Finita la leva torna nel paese natale
dove si mantiene facendo il
barbiere e l’insegnante presso
una scuola serale. Con gli amici
pistoiesi, con i quali aveva
mantenuto i contatti, partecipa
a numerose mostre Provinciali
nel corso degli anni Trenta.
Nel 1941 richiamato alle armi è
costretto a partire per il Montenegro
dove troverà la morte
durante una marcia di ritirata
nel maggio del 1945.
