Pistoia, Lorenzi was a self-taught
artist. His contact with the ‘Cenacolo’
in Pistoia, which included
the artists Agostini, Bugiani, Cappellini,
Mariotti and Zanzotto,
may date back to a period spent in
the countryside as the guest of his
aunt in San Rocco, near Pistoia.
The earliest record of Lorenzi’s
art dates back to 1928, when he
took part in the 1st Mostra Provinciale
d’Arte in Pistoia. In the same
year he did his military service
in Florence, where he continued
his cultural education by visiting
museums and galleries. In 1929,
also in Florence, he took part in
the 2nd Mostra Regionale d’Arte.
After completing his military service
he returned home where he
worked as a barber and taught
in an evening school. Along with
his friends in Pistoia, with whom
he had kept in touch, he took part
in many of the Mostre Provinciali
during the 1930s. In 1941 he was
called up and forced to leave for
Montenegro, where he died during
a retreat in May 1945.
EGLE MARINI
(Pistoia, 1901 - 1983)
Sorella gemella di Marino Marini,
con il fratello nel 1917 inizia
a frequentare i corsi dell’Accademia
di Belle Arti di Firenze,
seguendo le lezioni di Chini e
dal 1922 probabilmente anche
i corsi di scultura di Domenico
Trentecoste. Dopo il ritorno
del fratello dal servizio militare,
Egle frequenta assiduamente
lo studio fiorentino di Marino
dove ha l’occasione di incontrare
il pittore Giuntoli, vecchio
compagno di studi all’Accademia
e suo futuro marito. Nel
1928 con il gemello la troviamo
alla Prima Mostra Provinciale
d’arte a Pistoia e successivamente
a varie esposizioni provinciali
e regionali organizzate
dal Sindacato Fascista di Belle
Arti. I soggetti delle sue opere
sono quelli familiari, quelli che
incidono più sulle sue emozioni,
le nature morte e soprattutto i
ritratti contraddistinti da uno
stile che risente della cultura
post-impressionista francese
con colori tenui e con effetti
che evocano la decorazione a
fresco. Dopo la partecipazione
alla Biennale veneziana del
1936, diversamente dal fratello,
la pittrice si allontana dalla notorietà,
vive una vita appartata
e la sua attività espositiva diminuisce
mentre l’ispirazione artistica
si dirige soprattutto verso
la produzione lirica.
The twin sister of Marino Marini,
Egle started attending courses
with her brother at the Accademia
di Belle Arti in Florence
in 1917, attending lessons with
Chini and, from 1922, probably
sculpture courses with Domenico
Trentacoste. When her brother
returned from his military service,
Egle regularly frequented his Florence
studio where she met again
the painter Giuntoli, her old classmate
at the Accademia and future
husband. In 1928 she and her
brother showed at the 1st Mostra
Provinciale d’arte in Pistoia and
later at various provincial and
regional exhibitions organised by
the Fascist union of Fine Arts. The
subjects of her paintings tend to
be familial, those that touched her
sentiment, still lifes, and above all
portraits, with a distinctive style
influenced by post-Impressionist
French culture, with pale colours
and effects evocative of fresco
decorations. After taking part
in the 1936 Biennale in Venice,
she distanced herself from fame,
unlike her brother. She opted for
a secluded life, and her participation
in exhibitions decreased
while her artistic output focused
mainly on lyrical works.
MARINO MARINI
(Pistoia, 1901 - Forte dei Marmi,
1980)
Nel 1917 si iscrive all’Accademia
di Belle Arti di Firenze,
dove frequenta i corsi di Chini,
di Celestino Celestini e dal 1922
quelli di Domenico Trentacoste.
Di ritorno dal servizio militare
nel 1926 apre uno studio a
Firenze. Nel 1927, in occasione
dell’Esposizione delle Arti
Decorative di Monza, conosce
Arturo Martini, che dopo due
anni lo chiama a succedergli
nell’insegnamento della scultura
presso la Scuola d’Arte
di Villa Reale di Monza, dove
Marino insegnerà fino al 1940.
Dopo la sua prima partecipazione
nel 1928 alla Biennale di
Venezia, espone in una serie di
collettive con il gruppo del Novecento
Toscano. Nel 1929 e poi
nel 1930 si reca a Parigi, dove
stringe i contatti con molti artisti,
di cui frequenta gli studi: da
Pablo Picasso a Henri Laurens,
da Jacques Lipchitz a Georges
Braque. Nel 1929 è presente
alla II Mostra del Novecento
Italiano a Milano, città dove nel
1932 presenta la sua prima personale.
Ottiene importanti riconoscimenti
con la partecipazione
alle Quadriennali romane
del 1931 e del 1935. Stabilitosi
definitivamente in Lombardia,
compie numerosi viaggi nelle
grandi capitali internazionali
dell’arte, imponendosi come
uno dei protagonisti della ricerca
plastica europea. Passò gli
anni della Seonda Guerra Mondiale
in Svizzera, dove conobbe
Germaine Richier, Alberto Giacometti
e Fritz Wotruba. Partecipa
alla Biennale del 1948 e in
tale occasione conosce Henry
Moore, instaurando un’amicizia
confermata nei lunghi periodi di
soggiorno comune a Forte dei
Marmi. Nello stesso anno conosce
il grande mercante tedescoamericano
Curt Valentin che lo
invita negli Stati Uniti e gli organizza
una grande personale
a New York nel 1950 avviando
un’oculata promozione delle
opere dell’artista nel mercato
americano e mondiale. Nel 1952
riceve il Gran Premio nazionale
per la Scultura alla Biennale di
Venezia.
Marini enrolled in the Accademia
di Belle Arti in Florence in 1917
where he attended courses held
by Chini and Celestino Celestini
and, from 1922, Domenico
Trentacoste. When he returned
from his military service in 1920
he opened a studio in Florence.
In 1927, during the Esposizione
delle Arti Decorative in Monza,
he met Arturo Martini, who called
him two years later to take over
from him as chair of sculpture at
the Scuola d’Arte di Villa Reale
in Monza. Marini taught there
until 1940. After taking part in
the 1928 Venice Biennale, he
showed work in a series of group
exhibitions with the group of the
Novecento Toscano. In 1929, and
again in 1930, he went to Paris
where he met many artists, and
frequented their studios: Picasso,
Laurens, Lipchitz, and Braque.
In 1929 he took part in the 2 nd
Mostra del Novecento in Milan,
where he also held his first solo
show in 1932. He received significant
recognition for his work
at the 1931 and 1935 Quadriennale
exhibitions in Rome. Having
settled definitively in Lombardy,
he frequently travelled to the
great international art capitals
and emerged as one of the leading
sculptors in Europe. He spent
the war in Switzerland where he
became friends with Germaine
Richier, Alberto Giacometti and
Fritz Wotruba.
He took part in the 1948 Biennale
where he met Henry Moore,
and began a friendship that was
consolidated during their long
shared stays in Forte dei Marmi.
In that year he also met the great
German-American art dealer Curt
Valentin, who invited him to the
USA and organised a large solo
show for him in New York in 1950,
launching a well-organised promotion
of Marini’s work on the
American and world markets.
In 1952 he received the national
Grand Prix for Sculpture at the
Venice Biennale.
UMBERTO MARIOTTI
