NOMADIC LIFESTYLE / MIXED REALITY Virtual Reality gets real While Virtual Reality (VR) is the future of gaming, for years Mixed Reality (MR) has been on the verge of going mainstream, but it never took off. That’s about to change thanks to Microsoft. It’s not that there aren’t hundreds of VR/ AR/MR companies out there developing exciting products. But a company like Magic Leap, the pet favorite of most of the high-tech press, hasn’t yet made its leap. Microsoft is more important to VR because it’s already a giant—and small steps from a giant are always more important than the leaping around of smaller folk. Microsoft is embracing Mixed Reality, a combination of VR and Augmented Reality. Windows Mixed Reality offers more than 2,500 games and VR experiences. That’s a huge library of content from Microsoftinspired developers and they’ve leveraged their own successful Microsoft Store (as well as Steam) to bring VR/AR/MR to the masses. As a leading PC platform, Microsoft took a big leap with the VR industry on its back when it launched Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, enabling any Windows 10 computer to be VR ready. And Microsoft created the “Windows Mixed Reality-ready PC.” With an unsung multi-billion-dollar hardware division in computer accessories and Xbox, Microsoft knew from experience customers needed to see a full range of VR products. Using industry contacts, Microsoft Store sells Samsung, Asus, HP, Dell and Acer headsets for VR. And then there’s Microsoft HoloLens, the first self-contained, holographic computer – a star in the MR world. When you go through the halls of IFA and see all the VR/AR related products, you’ll find real-world footsteps from this giant. » HALL 13 / Stand 101 www.ifa-international.org IFA International • Friday 31 st August 2018 61
