NEWS Sharp and Panasonic have been among the companies which have underlined their longstanding commitment to ecologically correct manufacturing practices. Now the greening of the CE industry is gathering momentum. IFA International salutes the companies who care about our planet…. Giant US Retail Chain “On the Environmental Bandwagon” Office Depot Achieves 10% Absolute Reduction in Carbon Dioxide Emissions Office Depot has announced that it has achieved a 10.1% absolute reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas and electricity consumed in its North American retail stores, warehouses and offices. "Office Depot's environmental strategy is structured around a vision to increasingly buy green, be green and sell green," said Yalmaz Siddiqui, Environmental Strategy Advisor for Office Depot. "By reducing greenhouse gases so dramatically in one year, we have clearly shown a commitment to being green and reducing our carbon footprint." Office Depot was able to reduce Company emissions by implementing a range of initiatives to decrease energy usage in 2006, including: • Completing one of the largest energy efficiency Toshiba’s Factor-T Measures – in Pursuit of Eco-efficiency The need to address the impact of a consumer world on the environment is being pursued by Toshiba with an indicator called Factor-T. It measures both the value of a product to the consumer along with the environmental impact of a product to produce a coefficient. The higher the rating the more user and environmentally friendly the product is. “Our goal is to enhance the quality of our products whilst reducing the environmental impact of our products,” says Yoshiki Tanaka, Vice President & General Manager, Toshiba European Environment Office. lighting retrofits ever by retrofitting the Company's North American retail store chain with T5 energyefficient lights; • Installing new highefficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning units; • Adding light-sensors in stores to automatically turn off lighting when bathrooms and break rooms are not occupied; and • Rolling out an Energy Management System upgrade to the majority of stores, allowing for the: • Tracking of energy usage and trends from a central location; • Setting of temperatures for all stores; • Identification of energy use anomalies (e.g. lights left on overnight, malfunctioning AC units, doors left open); and • Central notification when these anomalies occur, which allows management to fix any issues remotely or notify store managers immediately. “There is a symbiotic relationship between the creation of new values for the customer and the need to mitigate climate change, optimise resources and manage the use of chemicals. This is assessed throughout the life cycle of a product from manufacture to use and reuse and recycling.” Tanaka told IFA International that Toshiba have established a laboratory in Japan to specifically address how to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing. “One way of addressing both quality and value for the customer and diminishing the environmental impact of a product is to make lighter and smaller devices.” “Green PC” Launched at IFA by FSC Ultra-low-emission and energy-saving home computer debuts at IFA The first dedicated “green PC” for consumers was unveiled at IFA 2007 in Berlin by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. The new Green Edition Scaleo PC features a “green” motherboard notable for the particularly low emissions during the manufacturing process, and runs specially-developed software designed to reduce Toshiba have set overall goals for diminishing the environmental impact in both manufacturing and business processes. Using the year 2000 as a benchmark for all their products and practices and their Factor-T co-efficient, Toshiba’s goal is to improve product eco-efficiency by a Factor-T of 2.2 and to achieve a business process ecoefficiency of 1.2 by 2010. Tanaka says, “The Factor-T was adapted by Toshiba from German research and we are looking into making it an industry standard so that consumers will have a single clear standard by which to assess progress.” Hall2.1 Stand 216 & 217 power consumption to a minimum. The Green Edition PC meets the stringent guidelines defined by the American environmental standard Energy Star 4.0 and is near-silent in operation. The Scaleo PC Green Edition will go on sale from October 2007 at a starting price of 499 Euros. The Scaleo PC Green Edition features an Intel Pentium Dual Core processor, 1GB RAM working memory, a 160GB hard disk, a multi-norm DVD writer with Double Layer support, an 11-in-1 card reader for all the usual card formats, and runs Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. Unveiling of the Green Edition Scaleo PC is the latest in a long line of initiatives from Fujitsu Siemens Computers underlining the company’s commitment to environmental protection. For some time, the company has been offering particularly environmentallyfriendly versions of its Esprimo Business PC and Business Notebooks. As early as 1992, Fujitsu Siemens Computers issued its first guideline on environment-friendly product design and the first “Green PC”, with an automatic powersaving function, was introduced in 1993. The first power-saving Esprimo PC was developed in 2005 and an Esprimo Energy Saving Edition announced in June 2007 that enables business customers to save up to 50 percent on energy consumption compared with a three-year old standard PC.
