I NEWS I ADVERTORIAL Powerful, quiet, and comfortable room cooling from Midea's award-winning PortaSplit Midea Group is launching a new type of air-conditioner combining flexibility with efficient cooling technology to provide enhanced comfort Midea's Residential Air-Conditioning (RAC) division is presenting its latest air-conditioning unit, the PortaSplit, for the first time at IFA 2023, with high expectations that the new concept will redefine the AC market. Unlike traditional ACs, Midea's PortaSplit combines the flexibility and mobility of a portable AC with the strong cooling capacity and efficiency of a conventional split AC. The design provides powerful, yet quiet, cooling and it was the recipient of the GPTI Award for Room Comfort Technology innovation. Consumers have traditionally faced a conflict between cooling comfort and energy-saving, while also balancing flexibility with installation. A product that can provide strong cooling, quiet operation, an easy set-up, and increased flexibility is what Midea set out to create, and PortaSplit is the result. The product has two key design innovations: a plug-and-play split AC without fixed installation that also offers a highly efficient heat pump technology; and the latest AI algorithm to ensure energy-saving without any effort on the consumer's side. OUTSTANDING COOLING PERFORMANCE Although in its appearance it resembles a portable AC, the PortaSplit has the same efficiency as a conventional split AC. The unit's strong cooling capacity of 3.5 kW and a SEER of 6.1 surpasses all conventional portable ACs in the market, according to Midea. Compared with a conventional portable AC, the PortaSplit has vastly improved cooling capacity and energy efficiency. Based on rigorous StiWa testing, PortaSplit performed four times better than a conventional portable AC in cooling capacity [1] with three times higher energy efficiency than a conventional portable AC [2] . Tested under the same standards of a split AC, PortaSplit has the same cooling efficiency, cooling power and energy label class. For cooling, its rating is A++, and for heating it is A+. The secret of PortaSplit's prominent whole-room cooling performance lies in its heat exchange system. Typically, a portable AC is not powerful enough to cool an entire room because the heat is discharged through a large hose. This results in a drop of air pressure and draws hot air from outside back into the house which leads to uneven cooling. The heat of the new PortaSplit is dispersed via a heat exchanger without discharging air out, ensuring better performance without a change in air pressure. This means that it takes PortaSplit only 15 minutes [3] to cool down a room, and enables consumers to spend only €26 on electricity [4] for a complete cooling season. FLEXIBLE ENJOYMENT The unit also exceeds the common split AC with its flexibility. Although this new product consists of an outdoor and indoor unit, the indoor version has wheels so it can be moved around easily. Consumers can do the set-up themselves in three steps without any tools. Additionally, the components of PortaSplit are designed to ensure a do-it-yourself set-up poses no safety threat. Because of this special design, PortaSplit can be installed not only on a normal window, but also on a French balcony or a normal balcony, on a rooftop window and on a RV (caravan). The PortaSplit can automatically and subtly alter temperature for optimal comfort during sleeping. In silent mode, it operates at 39dB [5] , which is below the threshold for a good sleep [6] . This is because built-in, triplelayer soundproofing shields the motor, making the PortaSplit quieter than traditional portable ACs. The soft geometric design uses simple lines to make a high-end style statement while being practical and adapting well to different home decoration styles. In addition, both the hanging and freestanding versions of the Midea Air Virtuoso provide an excellent large air volume compared to competitor products: the air volume is as high as 800m³/h despite the small size of the hanging unit. The air volume of the freestanding AC is further increased to 1,510m³/h. In addition, the freestanding model has a double cross-flow 145° ultra-wide-angle air supply, which improves air supply efficiency. Users also benefit from rapid cooling and warming without long waits. Midea Air Virtuoso is equipped with professional air purifiers that feature internal circulation purification technology and the indoor air is purified and released through a HEPA net. The unit releases tens of millions of negative ions to charge and settle air dust, achieving double dust removal and purification while cooperating with bionic natural fresh air to provide users with healthy and clean indoor air. The unit has intelligent active self-learning OTA to realise multidimensional mapping linkage. It leverages the human comfort model, local climate, and behavioural big data to build an air comfort linkage algorithm.
