German Chancellor opens 50 th IFA A festive occasion with serious undertones as Internet security concerns are underlined The 2010 IFA opening gala again featured the presence of Germany’s Chancellor, Angela Merkel and Berlin’s Governing Mayor Klaus Wowereit, who celebrated the start of the world’s largest trade show for consumer lifestyle technologies. Raimund Hosch, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin, welcomed the guests in the Pantheon for Thursday night’s gala event. Prominent attendees Raimund Hosch, Angela Merkel, Miss IFA, Dr Rainer Hecker Philips and Korea’s Woongjin Coway form strategic partnership included the actors Elke Sommer, Robert Atzorn, Herbert Knaup, Dominik Raacke and Mariella Ahrens, fashion designer Jette Joop, TV presenter Miriam Pielhau, film producer Oliver Berben and the director Katja von Garnier. Other guests include Prince Alexander zu Schaumburg- Lippe, the singers Jürgen Drews, Katja Ebstein, Jeannette Biedermann and Patrick Lindner, as well as many other celebrities. In her address, the Chancellor warned that caution should be employed in the light of the growing speed of technological advances. Chancellor Merkel echoed security concerns previously voiced by her Minister for the Interior, Thomas de Maziere, about the roll out of Google Street View in Germany. The controversy over Street View has particularly hit in South Korea, Germany and Spain, after it was suggested earlier this year that the vehicles collecting images had also been recording fragments of Royal Philips Electronics have announced that it and Woongjin Coway - a leading Koreanbased well-being household appliance company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for future joint development and supply of air cleaners for the rapidly growing Chinese air purifier market. Under this agreement, the companies have agreed to build a strategic partnership by collaborating in the areas of developing overseas business, sharing of information and technology to bring new innovative products to the China and Hong Kong market. Both companies are expected to strengthen mutual cooperation in all steps of product development, from people’s online activities via public Wi-Fi networks. As a consequence, the presence of Google CEO, Dr Eric Schmidt at IFA on the 7th September for a Keynote address will be seen by European media as a major event. No doubt, the Google Chief Executive will be seeking to diffuse concerns over the Street View service. The German ministry some weeks ago set a date of the 20th of September for talks with Google and Microsoft over issues with regard to the Internet and personal security. It is not known at this stage whether Dr Schmidt will be meeting with any high ranking German officials, however it is believed he is seeking a face to face with top brass from several European countries in order to quell concerns. Yet again, IFA will be instrumental as a platform where political, economic and industry leaders decide and guide the future of the industry in Europe, and indeed worldwide. filters to final design, in order to develop the optimal product for each overseas market. This partnership enables Philips to expand its presence in emerging markets in general and Philips` ability to bring solutions that enhance the health and well-being of people in China and Hong Kong. Demand for air purifiers in China and Hong Kong is strong and expected to grow significantly, as a combination of rising household and consumers seeking improvements in quality of life with cleaner air for their homes.
