Project 24: One of the highlights of the architecture salon in the current Summer
Exhibition at London’s Royal Academy is a 2m long model of an all glass bridge.
Designed by artist Thomas Heatherwick (who conceived a spectacular, writhing
addition to Harvey Nichols’ Knightsbridge shopfront. AR January 1998) in
collaboration with engineer Anthony Hunt, the gently curving bridge can span
25m and is being considered for various sites both in the UK and abroad. Great
advances have been made in the application of structural glass, and Heatherwick
and Hunt’s proposal ingeniously exploits these.
The all glass structure (believed to be the first of its kind in the world) is based
on glass panels simply laminated together using a clear resin, without any metal
fastenings or fixings. The structure acts in compression, like an arch. The bridge
geometry emphasises the nature of the material and as the model demonstrates,
the structure has an intensely beguiling translucent quality.
As there are no existing standards for such a structural system, the next step will
involve full scale testing and analysis to determine design and engineering
parameters This research will be conducted by Anthony Hunt Associates in
collaboration with glass and resin manufacturers. The entire design process as
well as the actual construction of the bridge is being followed by film maker,
Diane Tammes, to create a documentary that will explain the bridge's
development to a wider audience. [The Architectural Review July 1999].
