que já resultou da revolução contextualista? Como, por exemplo, os lexicógrafos
têm evitado registrar como acepções numeradas o que não passa de
ativações de um mesmo sentido em contextos diversos? Vejamos, a esse propósito,
como Patrick Hanks sistematizou a redação do verbete eye no New
Oxford Dictionary of English (1998) – que é um exemplo da simples solução
que ele sugere.
Não vou mostrar aqui o verbete por inteiro, mas sim uma parte dele que
nos interessa, aquela em que o lexicógrafo transita da primeira acepção, anatômica
(que não copio), para a segunda, abrindo esta com uma definição genérica,
totalmente abrangente, numerada como II em algarismos romanos, que
diz “Um objeto: semelhante ao olho na aparência, forma, função ou posição
relativa”. Passa a seguir a indicar ativações desse sentido lato nos contextos de
mais alta frequência da língua, iniciando por “6 a O pequeno orifício numa
agulha por onde passa o fio de linha”; b Pequeno espaço oco dentro de um
pão e (hoje comumente) queijo”. Etc. Veja o verbete original:

II An object: resembling the eye in appearance, shape, function, or relative
position.
6 a The small hole in a needle for taking the thread. oe.
b A small hole in bread or (now usu.) cheese. lme. C A hole made in
