Dry chemistry stick tests for Troponin T - Myocardial Infarction
and Trvpsin II - Pancreatitis have recently been described and should
be included in the repertoire.
Staffing:
The service can most cost effectively be obtained from the central
laboratory and this should guarantee a quality service and the most
efficient use of staff. However geography may require off-site laboratories
and the question of how they are staffed requires consideration.
Unless the acute medical units generate a large volume of STAT
speciments throughout the 24 hour day it is unlikely to be cost effective
for laboratory personnel to provide the service. Alternative options
should be considered.
Although controversial, the staffing model of Near Patient Testing
or Point of Care Testing may provide a solution. The use of nonlaboratory
personnel, usually junior medical or nursing staff, necessitates
training in:
