VI. BUDAPEST ROUND TABLE 2006
The Budapest Round Table 2 is an annual event; each round-table discusses current
burning issues. The participants come from the young and older generations. The discussions
are recorded and a concise version of every event (in form of DVD) is distributed in
Europe to education establishments, relevant political leaders, etc. The aim is to inspire to
similar dialogues between generations.
This year, the Budapest Round Table 2006 was held on 10th of November. It was
organised in collaboration with the Central- and Southeast European Innovation
Area Consortium (CEIA), Hungarian National Commission for UNESCO;
Entrepreneurship Research and Education Network of Central European Universities
(ERENET) and Corvinus University Budapest. The financial contributions came from The
Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, Sweden; Korral Partners A/S, Denmark;
Atlantis Research Organisation, Greece; and the Hungarian National Commission for
UNESCO.
The discussions focused on Europe’s competitiveness dilemma. The EU is lagging behind
its global competitors. The competitiveness gap is not improving. Among the EU Member
States, economic divergence is growing. Rich countries are getting richer compared to the
average and the poor are getting poorer. The efforts of the EU is to achieve economic and
social convergence and enhance its global competitiveness are in question. SMEs and
entrepreneurs are the key to the solution. The participants issued the memorandum
“Europe Needs Successful, Socially Responsible Entrepreneurs”. It suggests launching
European-wide awareness campaigns promoting entrepreneurship and demonstrating the
value of the entrepreneurial career-path.
The memorandum was dedicated to the President of Hungary and the President of
European Economic and Social Committee. The memorandum has also been transmitted
to relevant European institutions, etc.
2 Gilbert Fayl and Ulric Fayl von Hentaller conceived the idea, elaborated the concept and co-ordinate it.
VII. FORMULATING ADVICE
As appropriate, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts formulates and facilitates
concise advice with broader science-policy relevance. These are called “Memorandum” or
“Declaration” and are transmitted to relevant EU- and national bodies and political
leaders.
This pro-active initiative serves the best interest of the scientific community by
calling attention to current “burning” issues that require action at the highest political
level.
