Sustainable and Low-Carbon Urban Systems
The quality of urban living is of immediate concern to all of us. Various communities have
tackled cities as a research object, among them industrial ecology, sociology, statistical physics,
urban planning, urban economics, and others. Choosing sustainability as a normative
framework of this course, we aim to understand how the various quantitative and qualitative
approaches can contribute to a coherent theory of sustainable urban systems, and
suggest direction for the proper management (οiκονομία) of cities. We will also investigate
what city living means for the citizens’ identity. On the applied level, the focus will be on
the potential of cities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A final part will be devoted to the
intersectionalities between narratives, storylines and frameworks of modern and sustainable
cities. Willingness to interact across the great divide between natural sciences, social
sciences and the humanities is a precondition for participation.
Working languages are English and German.
