Towards Integrative Biology – Computational and
statistical Approaches in the ‘Big-Data’ Era
Biological sciences are currently undergoing a transformation from a largely descriptive
to a quantitative science. Novel technologies generate vast amounts of data on hundreds
of thousands of biomolecules at increasing levels of temporal and spatial resolution. This
data is beginning to reveal the complex multi-layered nature of cellular regulation, consisting
of interacting networks of proteins, RNA, metabolites and DNA. In addition, substantial
variation in the behaviour of these networks is being uncovered between tissues,
cancerous and non-cancerous cells, and also between individuals. Mathematical, computational,
and statistical models to analyse this data are still in their infancy. There is thus
an urgent need for new approaches that deal with the data to uncover the basic principles
which underly the complexity and variety of life, and that pave the path to take biology
from a largely descriptive to a quantitative science. This transformation will impact almost
every aspect of industry and human endeavour, from agriculture to pharmaceuticals, to
healthcare, to environmental management, to chemical engineering. As part of the summer
school we will introduce state-of-the-art tools and approaches and outline key challenges
for further research.
