Harvard Business School Case Study: Financial
analysis of Porsche and Volkswagen
The goal of financial analysis is to assess the performance of a firm in the context of its
stated goals and management strategy. Financial analysis is used in a variety of contexts,
e.g. in company valuation, credit evaluation, financial distress prediction, security analysis,
mergers and acquisitions analysis, and corporate financial policy analysis. Financial
analysis involves assessing how various line items in a firm’s financial statements relate to
one another. Ratio analysis allows the analyst to examine a firm’s operating strategy in the
product markets as well as its financing decisions and the management of liabilities and
equity. In this case study from Harvard Business School we will illustrate financial statement
analysis using the examples of Volkswagen SE and Porsche AG, two prominent German
car manufacturers. To get the most out of the class, students should have completed
basic courses in financial accounting, financing, and management strategy. The case study
is taught in English.
