Exoplanets - Detection and Characterization of
strange New Worlds
Does life exist elsewhere in the Universe or is it confined to our Solar System or even to our
own planet Earth?
We are entering an era where mankind has developed the technological means to empirically
tackle one of the most profound questions of natural sciences, philosophy and religion.
Only in 1995, the first planet orbiting a star other than our Sun was detected and today the
planet count is up to more than 800 so-called exoplanets and more than 2000 additional
exoplanet candidates are waiting to be confirmed.
In this workshop we will have a closer look at what has been learned from the population
of exoplanets so far. On this basis we will then discuss what the most interesting and important
open questions are and how they could possibly be answered with new scientific
instruments in Space or on Earth. Different possible exoplanet missions/projects will be
assessed and the one which finds most support in our group will be laid out, analyzed and
planned in greater detail. The workshop will not only provide a broad introduction to one
of the most exciting research fields in modern astrophysics, but also key elements of project
planning and management will be actively applied within our group.
Working language is English.
