Skin versus Wood? Probably both!story. It is far more parsimonious to consider thecoracle as known from rural Wales as the type ofvessel to have been in use possibly as early as theLate Upper Palaeolithic and at least by the EarlyMesolithic. The Boyne curragh is theorised tobe a likely vessel form in use by Fosna colonistswho came to Norway during the Early Postglacialperiod from the now submerged North SeaPlain. This type of curragh is without formalgunwale construction and is viewed as a logicaldevelopmental step beyond coracles toward amore seaworthy vessel.During the Bronze Age sewn plank vessels dominatedthe whole of Scandinavia, however skinboat traditions were maintained on the oppositeshores of the North Sea until present times.Celtic oral history indicates a long tradition ofskin boat use throughout the British Isles. Thiswas also noted by Julius Caesar when he came toconquer the Britons and was impressed by theirskin boats. Medieval chronicles indicate thatskin boats were capable of making long rangeocean crossings (Hornell 1938; Severin 1976).This paper concludes that curraghs were themost likely vessel form in use throughout northernScandinavia during the entirety of the Mesolithic, independent of any contemporaneousdugout technological traditions in the southernBaltic region. These curraghs most likely developedfrom a more primitive coracle type duringthe Late Upper Palaeolithic.Anschrift des VerfassersJames McClean800 Ocala Road, Suite 300–143Tallahassee, FL 32304 USAJames@McCleanImageStudio.comBibliographyAndersen 1985: S.
